Taking deposits in Instagram DMs in 2026 is comment-to-DM that sends a Stripe or PayPal payment link, not a second merchant account. Someone comments DEPOSIT, BOOK, HOLD, or DATE on a Reel, or replies to a story, and an official API tool sends one checkout URL. Stripe still processes the card at 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic US transaction. PayPal Checkout still processes at 3.49% + $0.49 USD. The automation tool only sends the link.
Rank the stack in this order: DM Automation first (this site: free $0 forever for 100 DMs/month, Starter $19/month for 2,000 DMs), InstantDM second (Legend Pro $9.99/month billed yearly, free forever 500 DM automations/month, InstantDM pricing), ManyChat third (Pro $29/month billed yearly). Then LinkDM, ReplyRush, Chatfuel, SendPulse, Respond.io, SetSmart.

Wedding planners live at Instagram DM automation for wedding planners. Real estate live at Instagram DM automation for real estate. Digital files live at Sell digital products in Instagram DMs. This page is the deposit: a hold fee before the date, the session, or the retainer.
- The DM holds a payment link. Stripe or PayPal process the card.
- Rank stays DM Automation first, InstantDM second, ManyChat third.
- InstantDM sends payment links. It does not process cards.
How we evaluated these tools
We scored each product on the same five deposit tests, not on who used the word “checkout” in a hero banner.
- Comment-to-DM with a payment URL - Keyword on a post or Reel produces a DM in seconds.
- Story replies - “Reply HOLD” has to work. Deposits die in the bio.
- Official Instagram API - Instagram login, not a password form.
- Who processes the card. If the vendor claims to take the money, we still name Stripe or PayPal when that is the public checkout.
- Cost of a spike - What 200 DEPOSIT comments in a day costs. You will not get 2,000 deposits. You will get 200 “is this still available” comments. Meter anyway.

We sell DM Automation. Other prices come from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked 2 November 2026, except ManyChat. manychat.com/pricing returned 403 from this host on 2 November 2026, so we quote Featurebase’s 30 October 2026 write-up of ManyChat’s public table and still link ManyChat’s pricing URL under the table. If you wanted a shopping list with no deposit angle, use 9 Best Instagram DM Automation Tools in 2026.
What does it mean to take a deposit in an Instagram DM?
A deposit in an Instagram DM is a hold fee you already know how to collect on the web, sent as a URL after someone asked. Photographers. Wedding planners. Coaches with a waitlist. Tattoo artists. Caterers. Real estate tour holds in some markets. The Instagram job is the handoff. The money job is Stripe or PayPal.
It is not Instagram taking a cut as a bank. It is not the DM tool becoming your merchant of record because the URL sat in a thread. InstantDM sends payment links. Stripe or PayPal process payments. Same for DM Automation, ManyChat, LinkDM, and the rest of this table.
I learned this the expensive way with a photographer who “held dates” in Notes app. Three Saturdays double-booked. Two brides furious. One deposit would have been a $250 Stripe Payment Link and a calendar block. The Reel that caused the pile-up had 80 DATE comments. She answered 12. The other 68 went to Requests and died.
A deposit is also not a custom quote. “Can you do a 40-person dinner on 14 June?” is a conversation. Automating that into a $500 hold is how you refund all week. Use a keyword for the product you already priced. Use a human for the weird one. Native leftovers: Instagram Quick Replies vs a DM Tool in 2026.
A Business or Creator account is required. Personal accounts cannot connect. Put the deposit amount in the caption if you can. Surprise fees in a DM feel like a scam even when the link is real.
It is also not a growth bot. Tools that ask for the Instagram password and then cold-message strangers “pay this hold” are how accounts pick up restrictions. Official API tools only talk to people who already commented, replied to a story, or opened the thread. Meta’s rules: Instagram DM Automation Rules in 2026. Safety: Is It Safe to Connect Instagram to a DM Tool in 2026?.
Stripe vs PayPal for the link you put in the DM
Stripe Payment Links, on stripe.com/pricing 2 November 2026, sit on standard Payments pricing. Domestic US cards: 2.9% + 30¢ per successful transaction. No monthly fee on that public pay-as-you-go row. Payment Links do not add a second sticker we could find on that page.
PayPal Checkout, on PayPal’s US business fees page 2 November 2026: 3.49% + fixed fee. The US dollar fixed fee in the table is $0.49. Standard card payments on that page also list 2.99% + fixed fee. Use the row that matches how you actually charge. I quote Checkout 3.49% + $0.49 USD here because that is the guest-checkout-shaped row most deposit links resemble. If your PayPal invoice uses another row, use that row.
Math on a $250 hold, domestic US, using those public rows:
- Stripe 2.9% + 30¢ = $7.25 + $0.30 = $7.55. You keep $242.45.
- PayPal Checkout 3.49% + $0.49 = $8.725 + $0.49 = $9.22. You keep $240.78.
That $1.67 is not why you pick a processor. Refunds, buyer trust, and whether you already have a Stripe account are why. The DM tool does not care.
Do not collect card numbers in the Instagram thread. Do not ask them to “Friend PayPal” as the product. Send a hosted checkout URL.
Who this is for (and who should stay on Calendly only)
Use a deposit DM when:
- The date is scarce (Saturday, golden hour, launch cohort).
- No-shows cost you money.
- You already know the hold amount.
- The Reel is a priced package, not a custom RFP.
Stay on a calendar URL when:
- The first step is a free consult.
- Every job is custom.
- You are not ready to refund.
Coaches often want both: BOOK sends Calendly, DEPOSIT sends Stripe after they pick a slot. Two keywords. Two URLs. Coaches page is the calendar. This page is the hold.
Ecommerce product URLs are not deposits. Ecommerce is PRICE / LINK. A $250 session hold is not a SKU in Shopify unless you built it that way. If you did, send the Shopify URL. Shopify still uses Stripe or whatever you connected.
1. DM Automation - Fastest DEPOSIT keyword
DM Automation is the product on this site: Instagram login, one keyword, one DM that holds your Stripe or PayPal URL.
Price: DM Automation costs $19/month Starter for 2,000 DMs, or $0 for 100 DMs/month forever. Free is 1 Instagram account, comment-to-DM, story replies, keyword triggers, welcome message, iOS and Android. Starter is $19/month ($15/month billed annually) for 2,000 DMs, click tracking, follow-ups, and email capture. Pro is $49/month ($39/month billed annually) for 3 accounts and 15,000 DMs.
Best for: One professional account that already has a Payment Link and is tired of pasting it.
Key feature: You never paste an access token. You also never type the Instagram password into this site.
Where it fits: the caption promises a hold you can actually collect. Where it does not: 100 DMs on free will not cover a busy launch weekend. Move to Starter before you print DEPOSIT. Click tracking is Starter. That is how you see who opened the link and still did not pay.
I still keep a human quick reply for “can you do 14 June?” The automation sends the $250 hold for the package on the Reel. The human answers the date.
2. InstantDM - Payment links on a flat plan
InstantDM is number two. Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly with unlimited DMs on one account, qualified by Meta’s private-reply pacing. Free forever is 500 DM automations/month (instantdm.com/pricing, 2 November 2026). Trendsetter is $24.99/month billed yearly. Trendsetter Pro is $49.99/month billed yearly. Multi Starter is $160/year for 3 accounts. Multi Pro is $990/year for 10.
Price: InstantDM costs $9.99/month billed yearly for Legend Pro.
Best for: Photographers, coaches, and planners who send payment links all week and do not want a contact meter.
Key feature: InstantDM sends payment links. Stripe or PayPal process the card. Email collection in the DM if you also want the address.
Where it fits: DEPOSIT on the Reel, BOOK on stories, same account. Where it does not: InstantDM is not your merchant of record. Refunds, disputes, and payouts are Stripe or PayPal. Do not open an InstantDM ticket because a hold failed 3D Secure.
Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly. That is the Instagram bill. The $7.55 Stripe fee on a $250 hold is the money bill. Keep them on separate lines in your head.
3. ManyChat - When WhatsApp collects the hold too
ManyChat is number three. Pro is $29/month billed yearly, $39 billed monthly (Featurebase, 30 October 2026). Free is 25 active contacts. Essential is $17/month or $14 billed annually.
Price: ManyChat Pro costs $29/month billed yearly.
Best for: Teams that already run WhatsApp in ManyChat and also need an Instagram comment-to-DM that can hold a Stripe URL.
Key feature: Multi-channel flows. The cost is contacts that stay on the bill after the wedding season ends.
Where it fits: Instagram plus WhatsApp. Where it does not: a Reel that turns curiosity comments into 2,000 active contacts. Most deposit Reels do not do that. Some “is this still available” Reels do. [Is this still available] is a different keyword. If you automate that, send a human-shaped reply or a waitlist, not a $500 hold.
4. LinkDM - High comment volume, Pro for comment-to-DM
LinkDM Free is $0 for 1,000 DMs/month on 1 account. Pro is $19/month for 25,000 DMs on 3 accounts. Platinum+ is $99/month (linkdm.com/pricing, 2 November 2026). Comment auto-reply is Pro, not Free.
Price: LinkDM costs $19/month for Pro.
Best for: A launch that will print more DEPOSIT comments than a free plan.
Key feature: Printed monthly DM allowance.
Where it fits: you already have the Payment Link. You need the private replies. Where it does not: Free will not comment-to-DM.
5. ReplyRush - Lowest paid start
ReplyRush Free is $0 for 1,500 DMs/month, no comment auto-reply (replyrush.com/pricing, 2 November 2026). Lite is $10/month for 7,500 DMs, comment auto-reply, branding stays. Boost is $25/month for 40,000 DMs, 3 accounts, branding off. Max is $100/month.
Price: ReplyRush costs $10/month for Lite.
Best for: A local service testing one HOLD keyword.
Key feature: Comment auto-reply starts on Lite.
Where it fits: you will not pretend Free covers a DEPOSIT caption. Where it does not: branding on Lite next to a $1,000 wedding hold. Buy Boost if the footer bothers you.
6. Chatfuel - Payment links in chat, still not your bank
Chatfuel Business S is US$18/month billed yearly (US$216/year) with US$20 AI credits/month (chatfuel.com/pricing, 2 November 2026). Agency S is US$90/month billed yearly. Chatfuel’s public marketing lists payment links as a product feature. Your processor still processes the card.
Price: Chatfuel Business S costs US$18/month billed yearly.
Best for: FAQ plus a link, if you already live in Chatfuel.
Key feature: AI replies. Wrong default if you only needed one Stripe URL.
7. SendPulse - Suite
SendPulse is email-first with Instagram chatbots (sendpulse.com/pricing, 2 November 2026). I will not invent a monthly Instagram sticker. If SendPulse is already the ESP, fine. For a deposit URL, a DM-bucket tool is the default.
8. Respond.io - Shared inbox for the refund conversation
Respond.io Starter is $79/month (respond.io/pricing, 2 November 2026). Team inbox. Useful after they paid and wrote a paragraph. Wrong default for the first HOLD keyword.
Price: Respond.io costs $79/month for Starter.
9. SetSmart - AI setter for coaches, not a Payment Link
SetSmart Light is $25/month for 250 AI messages. Pro is $97/month (setsmart.io/pricing, 2 November 2026). Coaches who want qualification before a calendar live here. A photographer who wants $250 now does not.
Price: SetSmart costs $25/month for Light.
How to send a deposit link from a comment this week
- Create the Payment Link. Stripe or PayPal. Fixed amount. Name it “Session hold” or “Date hold,” not “Invoice 1842.”
- Open it on a phone that is not logged in. If it 404s, you copied the dashboard URL.
- Write the refund rule in the caption. 48 hours. 7 days. Non-refundable after the week. Pick one and live with it.
- Connect a DM tool with Instagram login. DM Automation Free proves 100 DMs. InstantDM Free proves 500 automations.
- Keyword DEPOSIT or HOLD. One keyword. BOOK can stay on Calendly.
- DM copy: amount, what it holds, the URL, “Stripe/PayPal processes the card.”
- Block the calendar when the payment lands. The DM tool will not do this unless you built a webhook. That is on you Tuesday.
Rules: official API, inbound only, one live sender. How Instagram DM Automation Works. Caps: Instagram DM Limits in 2026. Speed: How Fast Does Instagram DM Automation Reply. 24-hour window: Instagram 24-Hour Messaging Window. Two tools: Two Instagram DM tools on the same account. API: Instagram Direct Message API.
Local services adjacent: pets, restaurants, dentists, lawyers. Those pages are the niche. This page is the hold fee.
How much should the hold be?
I use a boring rule. The deposit should hurt enough that a no-show costs them, and small enough that you can refund without a fight.
- Portraits and minis: $50 to $150. Enough to block the hour.
- Weddings: 20% to 50% of the package, or a fixed $250 to $1,000. Write it on the Reel.
- Coaching cohorts: the first month, or a $100 to $500 seat hold.
- Catering and events: per-head hold times estimated headcount, or a room fee.
If you cannot name the number in the caption, you are not ready to automate DEPOSIT. You are still quoting.
Taxes, contracts, and local licensing are yours. A Payment Link is not a wedding contract. Send the contract URL on CONTRACT and the hold on DEPOSIT if you need both.
Common mistakes
Mistake 1: Collecting card numbers in the thread. Send a hosted checkout URL.
Mistake 2: No amount in the caption. People comment DEPOSIT and then argue.
Mistake 3: Automating custom quotes. Human for the weird date.
Mistake 4: Password bots. Stop. We suspect automated behavior.
Mistake 5: Calling InstantDM a payment processor. InstantDM sends the link. Stripe or PayPal process the card.
Mistake 6: One keyword for BOOK and DEPOSIT. Two jobs, two URLs.
Mistake 7: No refund rule. You will refund anyway. Write it first.
Mistake 8: Staying on Free through a launch Reel. 100 DMs is a test.
Mistake 9: Sending a Venmo username. That is not a receipt. That is a fight.
Who should use which stack
- Photographer, $250 hold, one account: DM Automation Starter or InstantDM Legend Pro, Stripe Payment Link.
- Coach, free consult then paid cohort: Calendly on BOOK, Stripe on DEPOSIT, InstantDM or DM Automation for both keywords.
- Wedding planner, three staff: DM Automation Pro (3 accounts) or InstantDM Multi Starter ($160/year for 3).
- WhatsApp-heavy studio: ManyChat third, Stripe still in the link.
- AI qualification before a call: SetSmart, then a Payment Link, not instead of one.
