Build an Email List from Instagram DMs in 2026

Comment LIST or GUIDE, capture the email in a DM. DM Automation first, InstantDM $9.99/mo billed yearly, ManyChat third. Verified October 2026.

DM Automation editorialUpdated October 19, 202617 min read

Building an email list from Instagram DMs in 2026 is comment-to-DM that captures an address, not a second newsletter platform. Someone comments LIST, GUIDE, PDF, or EMAIL on a Reel. The DM arrives in seconds and either asks for the email in the thread or sends a magnet URL that collects it. Kit, MailerLite, Beehiiv, or your ESP still holds the list. Stripe or PayPal still process any paid upgrade. The automation tool only runs the Instagram side.

Rank the stack in this order: DM Automation first (this site: free 100 DMs/month, Starter $19/month with email capture inside the DM), InstantDM second (Legend Pro $9.99/month billed yearly, email collection in the DM, InstantDM pricing, October 2026), ManyChat third if you also need WhatsApp. Then LinkDM Pro $19/month, ReplyRush Lite $10/month with an email collector on paid plans, Chatfuel Business from US$18/month billed yearly, SendPulse if you already pay for email.

Prices below come from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked 19 October 2026, except ManyChat’s public table which we quote from Featurebase’s write-up of ManyChat’s 2 March 2026 plans (Manychat Pricing 2026) and link to ManyChat pricing. manychat.com/pricing still returns 403 from this host.

What does it mean to build an email list from Instagram DMs?

Building an email list from Instagram DMs means software replies, through Meta’s official API, when someone already commented or messaged you, and that reply collects an email you can send to later. The usual trigger is a keyword on a Reel or a story. The usual action is one of two handoffs.

  1. Collect in the DM. The bot asks for an email, stores it, then sends the magnet. DM Automation Starter, InstantDM, and ReplyRush paid plans advertise this. Your ESP still needs the address if you want a newsletter, not only a spreadsheet.
  2. Send a magnet URL. The DM holds a Beehiiv, Kit, MailerLite, ConvertKit-era landing page, or a Google Form. The ESP collects the address. The DM tool only sent the link.

It is not an ESP. It does not replace Kit or Beehiiv. It does not warm a domain. It does not run a broadcast to 12,000 people on Tuesday. Instagram is where the comment happened. Email is where you write next week when the Reel is dead.

It is also not a growth bot. Tools that ask for the Instagram password and then message strangers “drop your email” are a different category. Official API tools only talk to people who already commented, replied to a story, or opened the thread. Meta’s rules live in the Instagram messaging docs.

It is not scraping. You do not pull emails off comments. You do not buy a “Instagram email extractor.” People type the address because they wanted the magnet. That is the whole compliance story.

A Business or Creator account is required. Personal accounts cannot connect.

Creators mix this up with link-in-bio. A bio link is one URL for everyone. A comment keyword is a specific magnet for people who just watched the Reel. The list you get from LIST on a “email swipe file” Reel is a different list than the one you get from a generic bio landing page. Treat them as different.

How we ranked these tools for email capture

Five criteria, same weight for every product:

  1. Comment-to-DM that can collect or send a magnet - Keyword on a post or Reel produces a DM in seconds. That is the whole list job on day one.
  2. Story replies - “Reply LIST” on a story still converts. Feed comments are not enough.
  3. Official Instagram API - Instagram login, not a password form.
  4. Cost of a spike - What 1,500 LIST comments in a day costs. Flat DM buckets beat per-contact bills when a lead magnet Reel hits. Contacts and emails are not the same meter, but ManyChat will bill the person as a contact either way.
  5. Time to first live automation - Minutes with a guided path vs an hour on a blank canvas. Most people do not need a 12-step quiz to send a PDF.

We sell DM Automation. Other tool prices are taken from those vendors’ public pages or a dated public quote of those pages. SendPulse is in the list because people already paying for email look for an Instagram module. It is not ranked above ManyChat.

1. DM Automation - Fastest LIST keyword, email capture on Starter

DM Automation is the product on this site. Free forever: 1 Instagram account, 100 automated DMs a month, comment-to-DM, story replies, keyword triggers, welcome message, iOS and Android. Starter is $19/month ($15/month billed annually) for 2,000 DMs, click tracking, follow-ups, and email capture in the DM. Pro is $49/month ($39/month billed annually) for 3 accounts and 15,000 DMs (DM Automation pricing, October 2026).

List setup is short. Connect a Business or Creator account through Instagram login. Point the automation at one Reel that already promises a magnet. Set the keyword to LIST, GUIDE, or PDF. On free, paste the ESP landing page URL in the DM. On Starter, turn on email capture in the thread, then send the file. Publish. Comment from a second account. Confirm the address actually landed where you expected: export, webhook, or the ESP.

Where it fits: you want the first magnet live today, and a free plan that is not a 7-day countdown. A creator testing whether comments become emails should start here. Starter is the line item if you want the address captured in the DM instead of only a URL tap.

Where it does not: 100 DMs/month on free will not cover a viral magnet week. One spike of 2,000 comments fills Starter for the month. Upgrade to Pro, or pick a bigger published bucket (LinkDM Pro at 25,000 DMs), when volume shows up. If you needed WhatsApp capture too, ManyChat or Chatfuel.

The concession is honest. DM Automation is not Beehiiv. It does not send the Friday newsletter. Export or webhook the addresses into the ESP you already trust. If you skip that step, you built a DM inbox, not a list.

2. InstantDM - $9.99 Legend Pro, email collection in the DM

InstantDM is number two on this site. Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly with unlimited DMs (up to 800 an hour), Instagram plus Facebook, and story, Live, and next-post triggers. Email collection in the DM is on paid. Trendsetter is $24.99/month billed yearly for the flow editor, Meta Ads, API, and webhooks. Trendsetter Pro is $49.99/month billed yearly. Free forever is 500 DM automations a month. Paid plans also offer a 7-day free trial, no card (instantdm.com/pricing, October 2026).

People pick InstantDM for list work when the magnet Reel can spike and they do not want those people sitting on a contact meter forever. Unlimited DMs on a flat $9.99 yearly-billed plan means 2,000 LIST comments in a day does not fill a monthly bucket and does not create 2,000 billable contacts. You still respect Meta’s throughput. You still have to get the address into Kit or Beehiiv if you want a newsletter.

It sends payment links in DMs too, which is a different job. Stripe or PayPal still process the payment. InstantDM is not a checkout, not an ESP, and not a WhatsApp suite.

Where it fits: Instagram-first list building, email in the thread, a small flat bill.

Where it does not: you only needed to paste a Beehiiv URL and you are still testing. Start on a free DM bucket, then come back. If WhatsApp is where the list actually lives, stay on ManyChat.

3. ManyChat - Keep it if WhatsApp is also a list channel

ManyChat is number three. Pro is $29/month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly) with 2,500 active contacts on the 2 March 2026 plan set (Featurebase, quoting ManyChat’s public table). Free is 25 active contacts per month. Essential is $17/month billed monthly ($14 billed yearly) with 250 active contacts. Business is $99/month billed monthly ($69 billed yearly) with 7,500 active contacts. Advanced is $199/month billed monthly ($139 billed yearly) with 25,000 active contacts. AI is included on Pro and above on the new model. Extra contacts are billed on top. Numbers are not tax-inclusive. See ManyChat pricing.

Keep ManyChat when the same person might join from Instagram and WhatsApp, and you already store emails as contact fields in that canvas. Leave ManyChat when you only needed LIST → PDF and the contact meter is the thing you came here to escape.

The cost trap is contacts, not DMs. A magnet Reel that produces 2,000 new people can keep those people on the bill after they already sat in Beehiiv. Featurebase’s worked example of a 10,000-contact ecommerce brand on Business plus overages plus WhatsApp delivery lands at $307.50/month in their October 2026 article. That is an example, not your quote. A newsletter creator with one Instagram keyword usually does not need that stack.

Where it wins: WhatsApp plus Instagram, team routing, a flowchart you already built for “email please.”

Where it loses: a single Instagram keyword and a single magnet URL.

4. LinkDM - $19 Pro if the magnet can go viral

LinkDM Free is 1,000 DMs/month on 1 account. Pro is $19/month for 25,000 DMs on 3 accounts. Platinum+ is $99/month for 300,000 DMs on 10 accounts (LinkDM pricing, October 2026). Lead gen sits on Pro, not on Free.

If your last magnet Reel did 8,000 comments, Free’s 1,000 DMs is a morning. Pro’s 25,000 DMs is a real week. Do not buy Platinum+ until Pro has actually run out.

Where it fits: you want a printed DM cap and the magnet is the thing that spikes.

Where it does not: you needed email capture in the thread on day one of a free plan. Put the Beehiiv URL in the DM on Free, or pick a tool whose free or cheap plan states email collection.

5. ReplyRush - $10 Lite, email collector on paid

ReplyRush Free is 1,500 DMs/month. Lite is $10/month for 7,500 DMs. Boost is $25/month for 40,000 DMs. Max is $100/month for 400,000 DMs (ReplyRush pricing, October 2026). Comment auto-reply is not on the free plan. Email collector is listed on paid plans, including Lite.

If the ManyChat quote was the thing that stopped the list experiment, $10 Lite is the cheapest paid Instagram bucket on this list. 7,500 DMs is more than DM Automation Starter’s 2,000, at a lower sticker. Starter still wins if you want click tracking and email capture on this site’s product with the rest of the Starter set.

Where it does not: you expected comment auto-reply on Free. Pay Lite, or use another tool’s free comment-to-DM.

6. Chatfuel - Ask for the email inside a bot

Chatfuel Business is US$18/month billed yearly (US$216/year) or US$20 billed monthly, with a free trial. Agency S is US$90/month billed yearly (Chatfuel pricing, October 2026).

Buy Chatfuel when the magnet is not a file, it is a conversation: “which topic,” then email, then the right PDF. Instagram plus WhatsApp plus Facebook is Chatfuel’s home.

Where it does not: you only needed LIST → URL. Start cheaper.

7. SendPulse - Email suite with an Instagram module

SendPulse is an email-first suite with Instagram chatbots as a module (SendPulse pricing, October 2026). The public pricing page is built around email subscriber tiers. The free plan is message-limited on email. Do not treat an email sticker as an Instagram DM bucket.

Where it fits: you already pay SendPulse for email and want Instagram in the same login.

Where it does not: you came here to get a simpler Instagram tool and accidentally added an email suite. If the ESP is Kit or Beehiiv, keep it. Add a DM tool next to it. Do not migrate the newsletter to get comment-to-DM.

8. SetSmart - Not a newsletter tool

SetSmart Light is $25/month for 250 AI messages, no free trial. Pro is $97/month for 1,000 AI messages, then $100 per extra 1,000, with a 7-day trial (SetSmart pricing, October 2026).

SetSmart qualifies and books. It is not how you build a 4,000-person newsletter. Coaches who want a call from the DM can use it. “Comment LIST for the swipe file” should not.

How do you actually capture the email?

Two working setups. Pick one per magnet. Do not run both on the same keyword.

Setup A: ESP landing page in the DM. Caption says “comment LIST.” Public reply thanks them. DM holds one URL: the Beehiiv, Kit, MailerLite, or form page. The ESP does double opt-in if you turned it on. The DM tool counts DMs and, on some plans, clicks.

Setup B: email in the thread. Caption says “comment LIST.” DM asks for the address. Person types it. Tool stores it. Then the DM sends the file or the confirm link. You still export to the ESP. A CSV sitting in a vendor dashboard is not a newsletter.

Steps that stay the same:

  1. Business or Creator account.
  2. Instagram login, not a password.
  3. One Reel, one keyword, one magnet.
  4. Test from a second account. Confirm the email you typed is in the ESP, not only in the DM tool.
  5. Turn off any other automation on that keyword.

Comment-to-DM automation is the setup page. Instagram DM templates has shorter public-reply lines. Instagram story reply automation is the story trigger list builders forget. Free Instagram DM automation is the $0 starting map.

What the DM cannot do for your list

It cannot legally add people who never asked. Commenting LIST is the ask. Scraping is not.

It cannot replace double opt-in if your ESP or your lawyer wants it. Put confirm in the ESP. Do not invent a custom law in the DM copy.

It cannot send the weekly issue. That is Beehiiv, Kit, MailerLite, or whatever you already pay for.

It cannot fix a magnet nobody wants. If comments are “fire” and nobody types LIST, the Reel did not sell the file. Change the file or the promise. Do not buy a bigger DM plan.

It cannot process a paid upgrade. If the magnet upsells a course, Stripe or PayPal still take the card. See sell digital products through Instagram DMs for that job.

Cold DM “I thought you’d want this newsletter” is how you get We suspect automated behavior. Do not productize that.

Common mistakes when building a list from DMs

Buying a password tool because it promised “unlimited emails from Instagram.” If setup is “paste your Instagram password,” stop. See Is Instagram DM automation safe?.

Leaving the addresses only in the DM vendor. The Reel dies. You wanted a list you can email in six months. Export this week.

Running ManyChat and a new tool on the same LIST keyword. People get two DMs and two asks. Your opt-in rate looks like a bug.

Expecting ManyChat’s free 25 contacts to cover a magnet Reel. It will not.

Putting the whole link-in-bio page in the DM. One magnet. One URL. A 12-link tree in a DM is how people close the thread.

Forgetting story replies. “Reply LIST” on a story is a clean ask. Rebuild it.

Talking as if the DM tool sent the newsletter. It sent the capture. The ESP sent the issue.

Skipping the test email. Comment from a second account. Use an address you control. Open the ESP. If it is not there, you do not have a list.

How much should you budget?

Start at $0. DM Automation free is 100 DMs/month. InstantDM free is 500 DM automations/month. LinkDM free is 1,000 DMs/month. ReplyRush free is 1,500 DMs/month without comment auto-reply. ManyChat free is 25 active contacts.

On free, put the ESP URL in the DM. You can still build a list without in-thread capture.

When 100 DMs is not enough, the paid starts we verified on 19 October 2026 are ReplyRush Lite at $10/month, InstantDM Legend Pro at $9.99/month billed yearly, Chatfuel Business at US$18/month billed yearly, DM Automation Starter at $19/month (email capture in the DM), LinkDM Pro at $19/month, SetSmart Light at $25/month, ManyChat Pro at $29/month billed yearly.

Do not buy Platinum+, Max, Agency, Advanced, or Scale until a cheaper plan has actually run out.

A sane stack for most creators:

  • Instagram capture: DM Automation Starter at $19/month, or InstantDM Legend Pro at $9.99/month billed yearly, or LinkDM Pro at $19/month
  • Newsletter: the ESP you already use
  • Paid file later: Stripe or PayPal Payment Link, not the DM tool as a processor

If you already live in SendPulse, stay. Adding Instagram there can be cheaper than a second vendor. If you already live in Kit or Beehiiv, do not move the newsletter to get comment-to-DM.

Related jobs with different URLs in the DM: teachers and courses, coaches, ecommerce, Stan Store vs DM automation. The category ranking lives at 9 best Instagram DM automation tools in 2026.

Who is each tool for?

Testing whether LIST even converts. DM Automation free (100 DMs) or LinkDM free (1,000 DMs) with an ESP URL in the DM.

Want the address typed in the thread, Instagram only. DM Automation Starter at $19/month, or InstantDM Legend Pro at $9.99/month billed yearly.

Magnet Reels that spike. InstantDM Legend Pro, or LinkDM Pro at $19/month for 25,000 DMs.

WhatsApp plus Instagram capture. ManyChat is number three. Stay.

Tiny paid budget. ReplyRush Lite $10/month for 7,500 DMs.

Need a bot, not just a URL. Chatfuel Business from US$18/month billed yearly.

Already paying SendPulse for email. Stay. Use the Instagram module.

High-ticket setter, not a newsletter. SetSmart from $25. Wrong page if you came for LIST.

How to choose in 10 minutes

  1. Start with DM Automation (own tool on this site). Free 100 DMs/month. Starter $19 when you want email capture in the DM.
  2. If you want unlimited DMs on a flat $9.99 yearly-billed plan plus email in the thread, InstantDM is number two.
  3. If you need WhatsApp in the same builder, ManyChat is number three. That is not a failed list search.
  4. Lowest paid Instagram bucket: ReplyRush Lite $10.
  5. Published cap: LinkDM Pro $19.
  6. FAQ bot that also asks for email: Chatfuel Business from US$18 yearly.
  7. Already on SendPulse: do not add a second suite.

If two tools fit, pick the one whose meter matches the last magnet Reel you already posted. Then open the ESP and confirm one test address.
