Instagram Story Reply Automation: Turn Reactions Into Conversations

Story replies are the highest-intent messages you get and the ones most often ignored. Here is how to automate answers to keyword replies, emoji reactions and everything in between.

DM Automation editorial4 min read

Story replies are the most underrated messages on Instagram. Someone watched your story, felt something, and typed. That is higher intent than a like and higher intent than most comments.

They are also the messages most likely to go unanswered, because stories run for twenty-four hours and replies arrive across all of them, including the sixteen you were asleep or filming.

Story reply automation answers immediately. That is the entire pitch, and it is enough.

What you can trigger on

Three trigger types cover everything.

Keyword replies. Someone types a specific word. You asked “reply YES if you want the template” and they replied YES.

Emoji reactions. Someone taps a reaction rather than typing. A fire emoji on a product story is a buying signal that almost everybody ignores.

Any reply. A catch-all for stories where you did not ask for anything specific. Someone says “this is so true” and gets an answer instead of silence.

Most accounts want a catch-all running permanently, plus keyword triggers on stories where they are actually asking for something.

Setting it up

In DM Automation the flow is: pick story replies as the trigger, choose keyword or any-reply, write the message, publish. It runs on the free plan, and because the apps carry the whole product you can set this up from the same phone you posted the story from.

Three settings are worth thinking about.

Which stories it applies to

You can scope an automation to one story or to all of them. A keyword automation should be scoped to the story that asked for the keyword. A catch-all should be account-wide.

The delay

An instant reply is good. An instant reply that arrives before the person has finished typing their second message is strange. A two to five second delay reads better and costs nothing.

The follow-up

One follow-up a day later, referencing what they replied about, recovers a meaningful share of conversations that stalled. One. A sequence of four is how you get muted.

What to actually send

Story replies are conversational, so the automation should be too. This is not the place for a landing-page paragraph.

For a keyword reply:

Sending it over now 👇 dmauto.link/template

Tell me how you get on with it — I read every reply.

For an emoji reaction:

Ha, glad that landed 😄 Want me to send the breakdown of how we set it up?

For a catch-all:

Thanks for replying! I’m not at my desk right now but I read everything here. If you needed something specific, tell me and I’ll come back to you today.

That last one is doing real work. It sets an expectation, it is honest about being automated without saying “this is a bot”, and it keeps the thread open.

Qualifying inside the story reply

For anyone selling a service, story replies are the cheapest discovery channel on the platform. The pattern:

  1. Post a story about a problem your work solves.
  2. Ask people to reply with a word if it sounds familiar.
  3. Automation asks one qualifying question with quick-reply buttons.
  4. Depending on the answer, it sends either a booking link or a resource.

Two exchanges, no landing page, no form. The reason it works is that the person is already in a conversation rather than being sent somewhere to start one.

Keep it to one question. The temptation to ask three is strong and it is where these flows die.

Handing over to a human

Every story-reply automation needs a hand-off path, because these replies are where the genuinely interesting conversations start.

Set the automation to stop for that contact as soon as a human replies, and to flag anything that does not match a keyword. In practice that means you spend your inbox time on the twelve conversations that matter rather than the hundred that say “🔥”.

Common problems

Replies to old stories firing the wrong automation. Scope keyword automations to specific stories rather than account-wide.

The catch-all overriding keyword triggers. Check your tool’s priority order. Keyword rules should evaluate first.

Nothing fires at all. Almost always the account. Story reply triggers need a Business or Creator account with message access enabled for connected tools.

Replies from people who cannot receive DMs. Some accounts restrict message requests. You will see triggers without deliveries, and there is no fix beyond knowing the gap exists.

Worth pairing with

Story replies work best alongside comment-to-DM automation. The Reel collects reach and the story collects intent from people already following you. Running both means you are capturing the two ends of the same funnel.
