Instagram DM Automation for Agencies in 2026

Run comment-to-DM on client accounts. DM Automation first, InstantDM $9.99/mo billed yearly, ManyChat third. Verified October 2026.

DM Automation editorialUpdated October 19, 202619 min read

Instagram DM automation for agencies in 2026 is comment-to-DM on a client’s Business or Creator account, not a second social inbox for the agency. A client posts a Reel. Someone comments LINK, BOOK, PRICE, or a campaign keyword. The DM arrives in seconds with one URL the client already owns: a product page, a Calendly slot, a PDF, a waitlist. Stripe or PayPal still process the payment. The client’s store, scheduler, or course page still holds the asset. The automation tool only sends the link.

Rank the stack in this order: DM Automation first (this site: free 100 DMs/month, Starter $19/month, Pro $49/month for 3 accounts, Agency on request), InstantDM second (Legend Pro $9.99/month billed yearly on one account, Multi Starter $160/year for 3 accounts, InstantDM pricing, October 2026), ManyChat third if the client also needs WhatsApp. Then LinkDM Pro $19/month for 3 accounts, ReplyRush Boost $25/month for 3 accounts, Chatfuel Agency S US$90/month billed yearly, Respond.io Starter $79/month, SetSmart Light $25/month.

Prices below come from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked 19 October 2026, except ManyChat’s public table which we quote from Featurebase’s write-up of ManyChat’s 2 March 2026 plans (Manychat Pricing 2026) and link to ManyChat pricing. manychat.com/pricing still returns 403 from this host.

What is Instagram DM automation for agencies?

Instagram DM automation for agencies is software that connects through Meta’s official API to a client’s Instagram account and replies when someone already commented, replied to a story, or messaged that account. The agency does not need the client’s Instagram password. The client logs in with Instagram. The agency then builds the keyword, the public comment reply, and the private DM.

Agencies buy this for three jobs that look similar on a proposal and are not the same product.

  1. Client Reels. A beauty, shop, or coach client wants LINK or BOOK to fire a DM. That is comment-to-DM. Most retainers should start here.
  2. Client support inbox. Five agents, WhatsApp plus Instagram, ticket tags. That is a shared inbox. Respond.io lives there. Comment-to-DM tools do not.
  3. Client WhatsApp plus Instagram. ManyChat or Chatfuel. Do not sell an Instagram-only tool as a WhatsApp suite.

It is not a growth bot. Tools that ask the client to paste an Instagram password, then message strangers who never commented, are how client accounts pick up restrictions. Official API tools only talk to people who already contacted the account. Meta’s rules live in the Instagram messaging docs.

It is not a reporting suite, a creative studio, or a scheduler replacement. You can attach an AutoDM to a scheduled post on some tools. You still need a place to write the Reel.

A Business or Creator account is required on every client. Personal accounts cannot connect. If the client is still on a personal profile, that is the first ticket, not the automation.

Agencies lose money when they productize the wrong layer. Selling “we will DM their whole following” is a ban waiting to happen. Selling “one keyword, one URL, tested from a second account” is a retainer you can keep.

How we ranked these tools for agencies

Five criteria, same weight for every product:

  1. Comment-to-DM on a client account - Keyword on a post or Reel produces a DM in seconds. That is the deliverable most clients actually wanted.
  2. Multi-account without password sharing - Instagram login per account. A published account cap you can map to retainers.
  3. Official Instagram API - Instagram login, not a password form.
  4. Cost per client after a spike - What 2,000 keyword comments on one client Reel costs. Flat DM buckets and per-account bills beat a shared contact meter that one viral client can ruin for the others.
  5. Time to first live client automation - Minutes with a guided path vs an hour on a blank canvas. Agencies bill hours. Setup time is margin.

Last updated: 19 October 2026.

We sell DM Automation. Other tool prices are taken from those vendors’ public pages or a dated public quote of those pages. Chatfuel Agency and Respond.io are in the list because agencies actually buy them. They are not ranked above ManyChat.

1. DM Automation - Fastest first client keyword

DM Automation is the product on this site. Free forever: 1 Instagram account, 100 automated DMs a month, comment-to-DM, story replies, keyword triggers, welcome message, iOS and Android. Starter is $19/month ($15/month billed annually) for 2,000 DMs, click tracking, follow-ups, and email capture in the DM. Pro is $49/month ($39/month billed annually) for 3 accounts and 15,000 DMs. Agency is talk-to-us: unlimited accounts, volume-based message limits, client workspaces, reusable automation templates, white-labelled reporting (DM Automation pricing, October 2026).

Agency setup is short if the first deliverable is one keyword. The client connects a Business or Creator account through Instagram login. You pick one live post. You set LINK, BOOK, or the campaign word. You paste the URL the client already uses in the bio. You publish. You comment from a second account. You screenshot the DM for the Slack channel. That is the onboarding call.

Where it fits: you are productizing comment-to-DM as a line item, you want a free plan the client can sit on during a trial week, and you do not need WhatsApp in the same canvas. Pro at 3 accounts is a small roster. Agency is the conversation when the roster is the product.

Where it does not: 100 DMs/month on free will not cover a client’s viral week. One spike of 2,000 comments fills Starter for that account. Upgrade, or pick a bigger published bucket (LinkDM Pro at 25,000 DMs), when volume shows up. If the client needs a 12-step quiz or WhatsApp, this is the wrong SKU.

The concession is honest. DM Automation is not a 40-step flow builder. It does not do WhatsApp. White-label reporting is on Agency, not on Starter. Do not promise a client portal you have not bought.

2. InstantDM - Multi-account on a flat DM bill

InstantDM is number two on this site. Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly with unlimited DMs (up to 800 an hour) on one account, Instagram plus Facebook, and story, Live, and next-post triggers. Trendsetter is $24.99/month billed yearly for the flow editor, Meta Ads, API, and webhooks. Trendsetter Pro is $49.99/month billed yearly. Free forever is 500 DM automations a month. Paid plans also offer a 7-day free trial, no card.

Multi Starter is $4.44 per account per month, billed for 3 accounts at $160 a year, with 30,000 automations per account per month. Multi Pro is $8.25 per account per month, billed for 10 accounts at $990 a year, with 300,000 automations per account per month (instantdm.com/pricing, October 2026).

Agencies care about the meter. Contact pricing on a shared workspace means one client’s Reel can move the whole bill. A per-account DM bucket, or unlimited DMs on a flat plan, keeps Client A’s viral week off Client B’s invoice.

It sends payment links in DMs. Stripe or PayPal still process the payment. InstantDM is not a checkout and not a WhatsApp suite.

Where it fits: the roster is Instagram-first, you want a published multi-account SKU, and you do not want to explain contact overages on a monthly report.

Where it does not: the client lives in WhatsApp. Keep ManyChat for that client. Mixed rosters are normal. One tool for every client is how agencies overbuy.

3. ManyChat - Keep it when the client has WhatsApp

ManyChat is number three. Pro is $29/month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly) with 2,500 active contacts on the 2 March 2026 plan set (Featurebase, quoting ManyChat’s public table). Free is 25 active contacts per month. Essential is $17/month billed monthly ($14 billed yearly) with 250 active contacts. Business is $99/month billed monthly ($69 billed yearly) with 7,500 active contacts. Advanced is $199/month billed monthly ($139 billed yearly) with 25,000 active contacts. AI is included on Pro and above on the new model. Extra contacts are billed on top. Numbers are not tax-inclusive. See ManyChat pricing.

Agencies already know ManyChat. That is why it stays on this list. Keep it when the statement of work says Instagram plus WhatsApp, team routing, and a flowchart the client’s last freelancer already built. Leave it when the SOW is one Instagram keyword and the contact meter is the thing the client asked you to kill.

The cost trap is contacts, not DMs. If a client’s Reel produces 2,000 new people, those people can stay on the contact meter after the Reel dies. Featurebase’s worked example of a 10,000-contact ecommerce brand on Business plus overages plus WhatsApp delivery lands at $307.50/month in their October 2026 article. That is an example, not your quote. It is why Instagram-only retainers look at DM buckets instead.

Where it wins: WhatsApp plus Instagram, a canvas the client already paid to build, a team that lives in ManyChat.

Where it loses: a three-account Instagram roster that only needed LINK → URL.

Do not migrate a WhatsApp-heavy client off ManyChat because this page ranked Instagram-first tools higher. Rank the job, not the brand you prefer.

4. LinkDM - $19 Pro if the invoice should say DMs

LinkDM Free is 1,000 DMs/month on 1 account. Pro is $19/month for 25,000 DMs on 3 accounts. Platinum+ is $99/month for 300,000 DMs on 10 accounts (LinkDM pricing, October 2026).

Agencies that got burned on “unlimited” with no number like a printed cap. 1,000 DMs is a trial client. 25,000 DMs on 3 accounts is a small roster. 300,000 DMs is Platinum+ and you should not buy it until Pro has actually run out.

Where it fits: you left contact billing, you want the new invoice to say DMs, and three clients is the current book.

Where it does not: WhatsApp, a shared support desk, or an AI consult setter.

Comment auto-reply is on Pro, not on Free. If the SOW includes a public comment reply plus the DM, do not put that client on Free.

5. ReplyRush - $10 Lite, then Boost at 3 accounts

ReplyRush Free is 1,500 DMs/month. Lite is $10/month for 7,500 DMs on 1 Instagram account. Boost is $25/month for 40,000 DMs on 3 Instagram accounts. Max is $100/month for 400,000 DMs on 5 Instagram accounts (ReplyRush pricing, October 2026). Comment auto-reply is not on the free plan.

If the agency is testing whether comment-to-DM even belongs in the retainer, $10 Lite is the cheapest paid Instagram bucket on this list. Move to Boost when the third client connects. Do not buy Max because the sales page has a bigger number.

Where it fits: a tight paid start, then a 3-account rung that is still cheaper than most suites.

Where it does not: you need click tracking and email capture inside the DM on this site’s product. That is Starter on DM Automation. ReplyRush does list an email collector on paid plans. Confirm the field you need before you write it into a proposal.

6. Chatfuel - Agency S if the bot is the product

Chatfuel Business is US$18/month billed yearly (US$216/year) or US$20 billed monthly, with a free trial. Agency S is US$90/month billed yearly (Chatfuel pricing, October 2026).

Buy Chatfuel when the agency product is an AI assistant that answers questions across client brands, not only a URL paste. FAQ, size, “is this in stock,” WhatsApp plus Instagram plus Facebook. Agency S is the SKU for several client businesses.

Where it does not: you only needed LINK → URL on three creator accounts. Start cheaper. Do not put a $90/year-billed agency bot on a client who asked for a keyword.

7. Respond.io - Team inbox, not a Reel retainer

Respond.io Starter is $79/month ($948/year billed yearly). Growth is $159/month. Advanced is $279/month. 7-day trial (Respond.io pricing, October 2026). Additional users are extra. Monthly active contacts can add overages on Growth and Advanced.

Buy Respond.io when the client problem is a shared support desk, not a Reel keyword. Five agents, tags, WhatsApp, Instagram, a CSAT survey. That is a different SOW.

Do not buy it as the first Instagram comment-to-DM tool for a creator client. $79 is the wrong start for SHADE → URL. You will spend the onboarding month explaining why a support platform felt heavy.

8. SetSmart - AI setter retainers only

SetSmart Light is $25/month for 250 AI messages, no free trial. Pro is $97/month for 1,000 AI messages, then $100 per extra 1,000, with a 7-day trial. Scale is $297/month (SetSmart pricing, October 2026).

SetSmart is an agency tool only if the client is a coach or clinic and the deliverable is an AI setter that books a call. It is not a comment-to-DM of a product URL. If you productize “we will qualify your DMs with AI,” this is the lane. If you productize “we will send the link,” it is not.

How should an agency set up the first client?

  1. Confirm the account is Business or Creator. Personal profiles fail at connect. That is a 10-minute client task, not your emergency.
  2. Connect with Instagram login. Do not ask for a password. If a vendor UI asks for a password, stop. See Is Instagram DM automation safe?.
  3. Pick one live post or Reel, not ten. The first automation is a proof, not a catalog.
  4. Set one keyword the caption already asks for. LINK, BOOK, PRICE, GUIDE. Do not invent a word nobody will type.
  5. Write a short public comment reply and a short DM. The DM holds one URL. Not five. Instagram DM templates has shorter lines if you are stuck.
  6. Test from a second account the client does not mind showing in screenshots.
  7. Turn off any old ManyChat, LinkDM, or native “saved reply” that fires on the same keyword. Two tools on one keyword double-DM people. You look like a bot even when both tools are official API.
  8. Screenshot the comment, the public reply, and the DM. That is the first report. Clients do not need a 12-page PDF on week one.

Comment-to-DM automation is the setup page. Instagram story reply automation is the story trigger agencies forget to rebuild. Instagram DM automation: the complete 2026 guide is the trigger map if the junior on the account is new.

Do not migrate ten flows on day one. Migrate the Reel that actually converts. Then clone the pattern.

What does a client report actually need?

Agencies overbuild dashboards. The client asked whether comments became taps.

On week one, send:

  • The keyword and the post URL
  • DMs sent
  • Clicks, if the plan has click tracking (DM Automation Starter and up)
  • One screenshot of a real comment-to-DM
  • What you will change next week

On month one, add:

  • Which posts produced DMs
  • Which keyword to retire
  • Whether the free or cheap plan ran out
  • Whether story replies were live (most first retainers forget stories)

Do not report “reach” from the automation tool as if it were Instagram Insights. The tool did not create the Reel. The Reel created the comments. The tool sent the DM.

If the client wants a shared inbox with assignments, that is Pro/Agency on this site or Respond.io, not a creator free plan.

What agencies cannot replace with DM automation

WhatsApp Business API delivery. If the buyer’s thread is WhatsApp, ManyChat, Chatfuel, Respond.io, or SendPulse still own that channel. DM Automation and Instagram-first tools do not.

A 40-step quiz. Guided tools send a URL. Flow builders still win on diagnosis.

A creative retainer. Automation does not write the Reel. If comments are low, the problem is the post, not the keyword.

Cold outreach. No official API tool on this list should message people who never contacted the client. That is how you get We suspect automated behavior on an account you do not own. You will not like that Slack message.

The client’s checkout. Stripe or PayPal process the card. The tool sends the link. Do not write “we close in the DM” on a proposal if you mean “we send a Payment Link.”

Common mistakes agencies make

Buying a password tool because a freelancer already had the client’s login in a Notion doc. If setup is “paste your Instagram password,” stop. Official API or nothing.

Putting every client on ManyChat because that is what the agency learned in 2022. WhatsApp clients stay. Instagram-only clients can use a DM bucket.

Running two tools on the same keyword during a “migration week.” People get two DMs. The client thinks you broke Instagram.

Selling Respond.io or SetSmart as the first Instagram tool. You will pay $79 or $97 to learn that the client just wanted the URL.

Promising white-label on a plan that does not include it. Read the SKU. DM Automation white-labelled reporting is on Agency. LinkDM branding removal is on Pro.

Forgetting story replies. A lot of client setups never had them. Rebuild them. Stories still convert for coaches and local businesses.

Billing the client for “unlimited DMs” and then hitting Meta’s throughput. Unlimited on a vendor plan is not unlimited against Instagram. Trendsetter Pro removes InstantDM’s hourly cap. Meta’s rules still apply. See the Instagram messaging docs.

Talking as if the tool processed payment. Stripe or PayPal process it.

How much should an agency budget per client?

Start at $0 on a trial week. DM Automation free is 100 DMs/month on 1 account. InstantDM free is 500 DM automations/month. LinkDM free is 1,000 DMs/month. ReplyRush free is 1,500 DMs/month without comment auto-reply. ManyChat free is 25 active contacts, which is not a trial you should sell.

When 100 DMs is not enough, the paid starts we verified on 19 October 2026 are ReplyRush Lite at $10/month, InstantDM Legend Pro at $9.99/month billed yearly for one account, Chatfuel Business at US$18/month billed yearly, DM Automation Starter at $19/month, LinkDM Pro at $19/month for 3 accounts, SetSmart Light at $25/month, ManyChat Pro at $29/month billed yearly, DM Automation Pro at $49/month for 3 accounts, Respond.io Starter at $79/month, Chatfuel Agency S at US$90/month billed yearly, InstantDM Multi Starter at $160/year for 3 accounts, InstantDM Multi Pro at $990/year for 10 accounts.

Worked retainers, not quotes:

  • One Instagram-only creator client. Legend Pro at $9.99/month billed yearly, or DM Automation Starter at $19/month, or ReplyRush Lite at $10/month. Pass through or bundle. Do not put them on Respond.io.
  • Three Instagram-only clients. DM Automation Pro at $49/month, LinkDM Pro at $19/month, ReplyRush Boost at $25/month, or InstantDM Multi Starter at $160/year. Cost per client on LinkDM Pro is about $6.33/month before you add your hours.
  • Ten Instagram-only clients. InstantDM Multi Pro at $990/year, LinkDM Platinum+ at $99/month, or DM Automation Agency. Do not buy Platinum+ until Pro has actually run out.
  • One WhatsApp plus Instagram brand. ManyChat Pro at $29/month billed yearly, or Chatfuel Business at US$18/month billed yearly. Keep that client off an Instagram-only SKU.

Do not buy Platinum+, Max, Agency, Advanced, or Scale until a cheaper plan has actually run out.

Verticals you will plug into the same operating model: ecommerce, beauty, coaches, teachers, Shopee affiliates. The tool ranking stays. The URL in the DM changes.

The category ranking lives at 9 best Instagram DM automation tools in 2026. The ManyChat-alternative ranking lives at ManyChat alternatives for Instagram DMs. This page is the agency job only.

Who is each tool for?

Agency testing the first client this week. DM Automation free (100 DMs) or LinkDM free (1,000 DMs).

Three Instagram-only retainers, no WhatsApp. DM Automation Pro at $49/month, LinkDM Pro at $19/month, or InstantDM Multi Starter at $160/year.

Client also lives in WhatsApp. ManyChat is number three. Stay. That is not a failed Instagram search.

Tiny paid budget on one account. ReplyRush Lite $10/month for 7,500 DMs.

The product is an AI bot across brands. Chatfuel Agency S US$90/month billed yearly.

The product is a support desk. Respond.io Starter $79/month.

The product is an AI setter for coaches. SetSmart from $25 Light, usually Pro at $97.

How to choose in 10 minutes

  1. Start with DM Automation (own tool on this site). Free 100 DMs/month, Starter $19, Pro $49 for 3 accounts, Agency when the roster is the product.
  2. If you want unlimited DMs on a flat $9.99 yearly-billed plan, or a published 3-account / 10-account SKU, InstantDM is number two.
  3. If the client needs WhatsApp in the same builder, ManyChat is number three. That is the right product for that job.
  4. Lowest paid Instagram bucket: ReplyRush Lite $10.
  5. Published cap on 3 accounts: LinkDM Pro $19.
  6. FAQ bot across clients: Chatfuel Agency S from US$90 yearly.
  7. Team inbox: Respond.io $79.
  8. AI setter: SetSmart from $25.

If two tools fit, pick the one whose meter matches the spike you already saw on that client’s last Reel. Do not pick the one with the longest feature list.

FAQ

What is the best Instagram DM automation for agencies in 2026?

DM Automation first (this site: free 100 DMs/month, Starter $19/month, Pro $49/month for 3 accounts), InstantDM second (Legend Pro $9.99/month billed yearly, Multi Starter $160/year for 3 accounts), ManyChat third if the client still needs WhatsApp. Then LinkDM, ReplyRush, Chatfuel, Respond.io, and SetSmart. Ranked 19 October 2026.

Can an agency connect a client’s Instagram without the password?

Yes. Official API tools use Instagram login. The client taps through Meta’s screen. If a vendor asks the client to paste a password, do not use it.

How many client accounts do I need on day one?

One. Prove comment-to-DM on one Reel. Then add accounts. Pro and Multi Starter at 3 accounts are the first real roster SKUs we verified.

Does InstantDM work for agencies?

For Instagram comment-to-DM and story replies, yes. Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly on one account. Multi Starter is $160/year for 3 accounts. Multi Pro is $990/year for 10 accounts (InstantDM pricing, October 2026). For WhatsApp, no. Stripe or PayPal still process payment links.

How much is ManyChat Pro in 2026?

$29/month billed yearly, $39 billed monthly, 2,500 active contacts, on the 2 March 2026 plan set (Featurebase, quoting ManyChat’s public table). Free is 25 active contacts. See ManyChat pricing.

Will one viral client blow up a shared ManyChat bill?

It can. ManyChat prices active contacts. Flat DM buckets (DM Automation, InstantDM, LinkDM, ReplyRush) meter messages instead. That is why Instagram-only rosters often leave the contact meter.

Is Respond.io an agency Instagram tool?

It is a team inbox. Starter is $79/month. Use it when the SOW is support. Do not use it as the first comment-to-DM tool for a creator client.

Can I automate Instagram DMs from a client’s personal account?

No. Switch that client to Business or Creator first. API tools cannot connect to a personal account.

Should I run ManyChat and a new tool on the same keyword during migration?

No. People get two DMs. Rebuild one automation, test, then turn the old flow off.

Is this the same as the ManyChat alternatives page?

No. That page ranks Instagram-first replacements for a ManyChat bill. The tools page ranks suites. This page ranks tools for agencies running several client accounts.
