What Are Instagram DMs in 2026? (Inbox, Requests, Automation)

What are Instagram DMs in 2026? Inbox, requests, story replies. DM Automation $19, InstantDM $9.99, ManyChat.

DM Automation editorialUpdated October 30, 202627 min read

What are Instagram DMs? Instagram DMs are private messages in the Instagram inbox, including story replies and comment-to-DM threads. Message requests are still DMs. They just sit in a different tray until you accept them. A comment on a Reel is public. A DM is not.

Rank the tools that send those DMs through the official API: DM Automation first (this site: Free $0 forever for 100 DMs/month, Starter $19/month or $15/month billed annually for 2,000 DMs, Pro $49/month or $39/month billed annually for 3 accounts and 15,000 DMs), InstantDM second (Legend Pro $9.99/month billed yearly with unlimited DMs up to 800/hour, free forever 500 DM automations/month, instantdm.com/pricing, October 2026), ManyChat third. Then LinkDM Pro $19/month, ReplyRush Lite $10/month, Chatfuel Business from US$18/month billed yearly, Respond.io Starter $79/month, SetSmart Light $25/month.

This page is what a DM is: where it lives, how requests differ from Primary, why a Business account matters, and why a private thread beats one bio URL. The complete how-to is Instagram DM Automation: The Complete 2026 Guide. Limits live at Instagram DM Limits in 2026. The 24-hour window lives at Instagram 24-Hour Messaging Window in 2026. How a comment becomes a send lives at How Instagram DM automation works.

Prices below come from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked 30 October 2026, except ManyChat’s public table, which we quote from Featurebase’s write-up of ManyChat’s 2 March 2026 plans (Manychat Pricing 2026) and link to ManyChat pricing. manychat.com/pricing still returns 403 from this host on 30 October 2026.

  • A DM is a private Instagram inbox thread. Requests, story replies, and comment-to-DM are still DMs.
  • A personal Instagram account cannot connect official DM automation.
  • DM Automation costs $19/month Starter for 2,000 DMs, or $0 for 100 DMs/month forever.

How we ranked tools that send Instagram DMs

We ranked tools that send Instagram DMs on five criteria, same weight for every product:

  1. Official Instagram API - Instagram login, not a password form. Cold DMs to strangers are not this list.
  2. The send lands as a real inbox DM - Comment-to-DM, story reply, and keyword welcome still show up in the same inbox the person already uses.
  3. Business or Creator account - Personal logins cannot connect the official Messaging API. Tools that skip that fact fail the test.
  4. Cost of a 2,000-DM month - Flat DM buckets beat per-contact bills when a Reel spikes. Starter on this site is $19 for 2,000 DMs. Free is 100 DMs/month forever.
  5. How they use the inbox - Keyword DM, shared team inbox, or AI thread. Different jobs. Same destination.

Last updated: 30 October 2026.

We sell DM Automation. Other tool prices are taken from those vendors’ public pages or a dated public quote of those pages. We do not run Instagram. Inbox trays, requests, and account types are Meta’s product.

1. DM Automation - Keyword DMs into the inbox at $19 Starter

DM Automation is the official-API product on this site that sends keyword DMs into the Instagram inbox. Free forever: 1 Instagram account, 100 automated DMs a month, comment-to-DM, story replies, keyword triggers, welcome message, iOS and Android. Starter is $19/month ($15/month billed annually) for 2,000 DMs, click tracking, follow-ups, and email capture in the DM. Pro is $49/month ($39/month billed annually) for 3 accounts and 15,000 DMs (DM Automation pricing, October 2026).

You pick a keyword. You paste one URL or one script. The person comments, replies to a story, or opens the thread. The send lands as a DM they can tap. That is the inbox job. It is not a shared team desk and it is not an AI that interviews them for 12 turns.

Where it fits: first Business or Creator account, one offer, you want the private thread today. Where it does not: 100 DMs on free will not cover a viral Reel. Upgrade to Starter before you print LINK on a clip that can actually move. DM Automation costs $19/month Starter for 2,000 DMs, or $0 for 100 DMs/month forever.

It does not process cards. If the DM holds a Stripe or PayPal payment link, Stripe or PayPal still takes the money. The tool only sent the message.

2. InstantDM - $9.99 Legend Pro when the inbox spikes

InstantDM is number two on this site. Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly with unlimited DMs (up to 800 an hour), Instagram plus Facebook, and story, Live, and next-post triggers. Trendsetter is $24.99/month billed yearly for the flow editor, Meta Ads, API, and webhooks. Trendsetter Pro is $49.99/month billed yearly. Free forever is 500 DM automations a month with no card. Paid plans also offer a 7-day free trial. Multi Starter is $160/year for 3 accounts (instantdm.com/pricing, October 2026).

For the inbox job, it uses the thread the same way DM Automation does: keyword on a post, private message in the chat. The difference is the meter after a spike. Unlimited DMs on a flat $9.99 yearly-billed plan means 2,000 LINK comments do not fill a monthly bucket. You still respect Meta’s throughput. You still need a Business or Creator account.

It can send a payment link. That is still one URL in a DM. Stripe or PayPal process the payment. The inbox did not become a checkout app.

3. ManyChat - Multi-channel canvas, contact pricing

ManyChat is number three. It is the right pick when Instagram is not the only inbox. Pro is $29/month billed yearly ($39 billed monthly) with 2,500 active contacts, broadcasts, and AI conversations on the 2 March 2026 plan set (Featurebase, quoting ManyChat’s public table). Free is 25 active contacts per month. Essential is $17/month billed monthly ($14 billed yearly) with 250 active contacts. Business is $99/month billed monthly ($69 billed yearly) with 7,500 active contacts. Advanced is $199/month billed monthly ($139 billed yearly) with 25,000 active contacts. AI is included on Pro and above. Extra contacts are billed on top. See ManyChat pricing.

Creators buy ManyChat when WhatsApp is already how you send “your slot is booked” notes, or when a flowchart has to ask “PDF or call?” then ship the matching URL. That canvas is real. It is also why first-time setup takes longer than a guided comment-to-DM form.

The cost trap is contacts, not DMs. If a Reel produces 2,000 new people, those people can stay on the contact meter. A flat Instagram DM bucket bills the messages. ManyChat bills the people. If you do not need WhatsApp, you are paying for a suite you will not open. Where it wins: WhatsApp plus Instagram. Where it loses: one keyword, one DM, one URL.

ManyChat still lands in the Instagram inbox. The person does not see “ManyChat.” They see you.

4. LinkDM - $19 Pro for published DM caps

LinkDM Free is $0 for 1,000 DMs/month on 1 account. Story auto-reply is on Free. Comment auto-reply is Pro. Pro is $19/month for 25,000 DMs on 3 accounts. Platinum+ is $99/month for 300,000 DMs on 10 accounts (LinkDM pricing, October 2026).

Published caps help during a launch week. 1,000 DMs is enough to learn if a story reply converts. Free will not fire comment auto-reply. Pro at 25,000 DMs is the plan that survives a real spike without an emergency upgrade while you are on camera.

LinkDM is built around sending links in DMs. That matches the “one URL in a private thread” job more tightly than a full CRM inbox. Where it fits: one offer per post, high comment volume, invoice in DMs not contacts. Where it does not: WhatsApp, a shared inbox, or an AI that picks a membership.

Do not buy Platinum+ because a Reel “might go viral.” Three accounts on Pro is the useful cap: main, clip account, and a shop account.

5. ReplyRush - $10 Lite if you only needed the keyword

ReplyRush Free is 1,500 DMs/month. Lite is $10/month for 7,500 DMs with comment auto-reply. Boost is $25/month. Max is $100/month (ReplyRush pricing, October 2026). Comment auto-reply is not on the free plan.

For a new Business account, $10 Lite is the cheapest paid Instagram bucket that still covers a decent week. 7,500 DMs is more than DM Automation Starter’s 2,000, at a lower sticker. Starter still wins if you want click tracking and email capture inside the DM on this site’s product.

Use ReplyRush when the only job is comment-to-DM and you want the lowest paid start. If your whole plan is “comment LINK,” skip Free and start on Lite, or start on DM Automation free where comment-to-DM is included at 100 DMs.

The send is still a DM. The person still finds it in Instagram, not in an email client.

6. Chatfuel - AI thread after the first DM, not one URL

Chatfuel Business is US$18/month billed yearly (US$216/year) with US$20 of AI credits per month. Every plan starts with a free trial, no card (Chatfuel pricing, October 2026).

Chatfuel is the creator pick when the first DM cannot be a single URL. FAQ after LINK is the obvious case. The fan comments, then asks if the $47 file includes the bonus, then asks if it works on iPhone. The live sales page still helps. An AI agent that answers from your published copy helps more.

Do not use Chatfuel to invent a perk you do not list. The live page is the spec. The bot should send the URL and answer questions you actually published. Where it fits: questions after the first DM. Where it does not: you only needed one URL in the inbox.

The thread is still an Instagram DM. The AI sits behind your account. The person is talking to you in the same inbox they use for friends.

7. Respond.io - Shared inbox, not a keyword

Respond.io Starter is $79/month with a 7-day trial (Respond.io pricing, October 2026).

Where it fits: a small studio that already lives in a shared inbox and wants Instagram next to WhatsApp and web chat. Humans send the URL. Automation is not the point. The DM still lives on Instagram. The team just answers it from one desk.

Where it does not: LINK on a recap Reel. You would be paying a $79 inbox to do a $19 keyword job. Rank stays ManyChat at number three. Respond.io is later on the list because some teams already bought it.

If four people need to see the same Instagram thread, this is the lane. If you are one person with one keyword, it is the wrong meter.

8. SetSmart - AI qualifier, wrong meter for one URL

SetSmart Light is $25/month. Pro is $97/month (SetSmart pricing, October 2026).

Where it fits: a coach who wants an AI thread that collects budget, goal, and a booking URL for a paid consult. That consult is not a one-line LINK send. The send is still a DM. The job is a conversation, not a one-line link.

Where it does not: LINK on a recap Reel. You would be paying AI messages to send one URL. A 2,000-comment spike is a keyword problem, not a setter problem.

SetSmart stays on this site’s tracking list. It is not ranked above ManyChat. If the Reel is a $200 workshop, send the event page on WORKSHOP. Keep LINK on the file.

Where do Instagram DMs live?

Instagram DMs live in the Instagram inbox: Primary, General, and Message Requests, plus the same thread on mobile and desktop. Open the paper-plane icon. That is the product. There is no second Instagram for “business chat.” Your automation, your story replies, and your comment-to-DM threads all land in that inbox.

On the phone, the inbox is the Messages tab. On desktop, it is the same account’s message list in the Instagram web or app window. If you connected a Business or Creator account to an official API tool, the tool can send into that same list. The person on the other side does not get a new app. They get a chat with you.

Primary is the tray you actually check. General is the quieter pile. Requests are people you have not accepted yet. A send can be “delivered” and still sit in Requests if you never follow each other. That is why a launch can look dead in your Primary while 400 people are waiting in Requests. Check Requests. Do not assume the tool failed.

Story replies, comment-to-DM, and Click-to-DM ads still land in that same inbox. Instagram Click-to-DM Ads Playbook 2026 covers the ad object. The destination is the inbox, not a landing page.

Sent versus seen is not a different product. Sent means Instagram accepted the message. Seen means they opened the thread. A seen DM can still ignore your URL. An unseen DM in Requests is not a broken automation. It is an unread private message.

Some threads can be set to vanish after they are seen. That is still a DM. It is still private. Do not plan a launch around vanishing mode. The copy disappears. You cannot treat it like a receipt, a booking confirmation, or a payment-link log. Keep offers in a normal thread.

Group chats exist. They are still DMs in the same inbox. Official keyword automation is built for the 1:1 thread that starts from a comment, a story reply, or a message, not for blasting a group. If you need a group, that is a human conversation.

What is the difference between primary, general, and requests?

Primary is people you already talk to, General is lower-priority chats, and Requests are DMs from people you do not follow or have not accepted yet. All three are Instagram DMs. The trays change what you notice, not what the message is.

Primary is the default list for people you follow, people who follow you, and threads you already accepted. If a buyer already DMed you last month, today’s comment-to-DM often continues that thread in Primary. That is the best case. They already know the chat is you.

General is Instagram’s quieter bucket. Chats can land there when Instagram thinks they are less close: newer accounts, weaker graph, or messages it does not want sitting on top of your friends. You still received the DM. You just have to open General. If you only watch Primary, you will swear the automation “isn’t sending.”

Requests are the gate. Someone who does not follow you, or whom you do not follow, can still DM you. Instagram holds that message until you accept. Accept and it becomes a normal thread. Ignore it and they wait. Decline it and they do not get your inbox. For a public creator, a viral Reel produces Requests. For a local shop, a stranger asking “are you open Sunday?” is a Request. Both are DMs.

Message requests are why “I never got the link” is a two-sided problem. Your tool may have sent. Their phone may show a request they never opened. Tell people on the Reel: check Instagram requests if they do not see the chat. That one line saves a support week.

Filters move. Instagram has changed labels over the years. Do not build a SOP on a tray name you saw in a 2022 screenshot. Build it on the rule: if you cannot see the chat in Primary, look in General and Requests before you rebuild the flow.

A request is not a comment. A comment is public under the post. A request is a private message waiting for a yes. Mixing those two in your head is how people publish “DM me” in a caption, then look for the answer in comments.

Are story replies and comment DMs still DMs?

Yes. Story replies and comment-to-DM threads are still Instagram DMs. They open or continue a private inbox thread. They are not public comments, even when they started on a public story or a public Reel.

A story reply starts when someone taps reply on your story and types, or uses a story sticker that collects a response. That response becomes a chat. If you set Instagram story reply automation, the first reply in that chat can be automatic. The person still reads it in Messages. Instagram DMs are private messages in the Instagram inbox, including story replies and comment-to-DM threads.

A comment-to-DM starts on the public post. They type LINK, PRICE, or GUIDE under the Reel. The public comment stays public. The private follow-up is a DM. That split is the whole feature. You keep the social proof on the post. You keep the URL, the booking note, or the file in private. Setup lives at Comment-to-DM Automation. This page only names the object: the follow-up is a DM.

Native “private reply to comment” in Instagram is the same family. You tap a comment and reply in a DM. Automation does that at volume through the official API. The destination does not change.

If they never open Requests, they will say the comment-to-DM “didn’t work.” Check the public comment first. If the comment is there, the trigger fired. Then check whether the DM is sitting as a request on their side.

Click-to-DM ads are a third on-ramp. Someone taps the ad and lands in a chat with you. That chat is a DM. The ad is the source. The inbox is the room. Do not treat the ad as a different message type. Treat it as another way to start the same private thread. Details stay on the Click-to-DM ads playbook.

Voice notes, photos, and share-to-DM of a post are still DMs. They use the same inbox. Official keyword tools mostly send text plus a URL. Humans still send the rest.

What can a Business or Creator account do that a personal account cannot?

A personal Instagram account cannot connect official DM automation. A Business or Creator account can connect the official Instagram Messaging API. That is the line. Everything else in this ranking sits on that line.

Personal accounts can still send human DMs. You can still reply to a friend. You can still accept requests. You cannot plug ManyChat, DM Automation, LinkDM, or the rest into a personal login through Meta’s official path and expect a supported comment-to-DM. Tools that ask for your Instagram password instead are a different, unsafe category. Safety is a separate page: Is Instagram DM automation safe?.

Switching is an Instagram account-type change, not a new username. You keep the followers. You pick Business or Creator. Creator is the usual pick if you are a person with a face. Business is the usual pick if you are a shop, clinic, or studio. Both can connect. Personal cannot.

Once you are Business or Creator, you can:

  1. Connect an official API tool with Instagram login, not a password dump.
  2. Run comment-to-DM and story reply automations that land as real DMs.
  3. Use inbox labels, saved replies, and the professional inbox features Instagram ships for those account types.
  4. Run Click-to-DM ads into the same inbox.
  5. See professional insights on content. That is not a DM feature, but it is why most people already switched.

You still follow Instagram Community Guidelines. A Creator badge does not make a banned caption allowed. Comment-to-DM does not launder a public Reel.

If a vendor says a personal login is enough, they are not on the official API, or they are describing a human sending from the app. Do not confuse “I typed a reply” with “the tool is connected.”

You also need a Facebook Page tied to the Instagram account for most official Messaging API setups. That is Meta’s graph, not a random extra login. If connect fails, it is usually the Page, the account type, or a role, not your keyword.

DMs convert better than a link in bio because the URL matches the thing they just asked for, in a private thread, while the bio link is one URL for everyone. The bio is a hallway. The DM is a reply.

A bio link is one tap target under the name. Every visitor gets the same page: a Linktree, a shop, a newsletter, a “start here.” That is fine for profile traffic. It is a bad match for a Reel about one $27 PDF. They have to hunt. Most people do not hunt. They scroll.

A DM can send that $27 PDF URL because they commented PDF. The next person comments CALL and gets the booking URL. Same account. Two private messages. Two matching destinations. The bio cannot do that without turning into a menu nobody opens.

The thread is also private. They are not posting their email on a public comment. They are not arguing price in public. You can send a payment link. Stripe or PayPal process the payment. You are not processing cards in the inbox. You are sending the link they asked for.

Timing is the third reason. A bio link waits until they remember your username, open the profile, and tap. A comment-to-DM fires while they are still on the clip. Story reply automation fires while they are still in stories. That is the same person, fewer steps.

DMs are not magic. If the URL is dead, the DM fails. If the Reel promised a free file and the link is a $97 checkout, they feel baited. If you send the same bloated menu you already put in the bio, you wasted the private thread. Match the keyword to one URL.

Keep the bio. Profile visitors still need somewhere to go. Pair it. Do not pretend the bio disappeared. Use DMs for the people who already raised a hand on a post or a story. Use the bio for the people who typed your name.

Templates for the actual copy live at 24 Instagram DM Automation Templates You Can Copy. This page only needs the reason: private, matching, now.

How are Instagram DMs different from comments, email, and WhatsApp?

Instagram DMs are private inbox threads on Instagram. Comments are public on the post. Email is a different channel you own. WhatsApp is a different Meta app. Mixing those four is how people buy the wrong tool.

A comment is social proof. It lives under the Reel. Everyone can read it. That is why you want “LINK” sitting there 200 times. It is also why you should not put a raw checkout URL in the comment if you can send it privately. Public URLs get copied, stolen, and argued with. The comment starts the DM. The DM carries the asset.

Email is yours if you collected it. Instagram can change trays, limits, and the 24-hour window. An email list still reaches people who never open the app that week. Collect the address inside the DM if you want. That job is Build an Email List from Instagram DMs in 2026. Do not call the DM an email. They are not interchangeable.

WhatsApp is a phone-number chat. ManyChat is number three on this list because some of you already run WhatsApp and Instagram together. A WhatsApp message is not an Instagram DM. If a client says “just DM me” they mean Instagram. If they say “WhatsApp me” they mean the green app. Official Instagram API tools send Instagram DMs. Some suites also send WhatsApp. Price that as a suite, not as “DMs.”

SMS, Telegram, and iMessage are also not Instagram DMs. If a vendor demo jumps between those, ask which send actually hits the Instagram inbox. This ranking only counts tools that send through the official Instagram Messaging API into that inbox.

The person can still screenshot a DM. Private is not secret-from-the-universe. Private means it is not on the public post. Write like it could be forwarded. Do not put anything in a DM you would not want sitting on someone else’s camera roll.

What limits apply?

Instagram DM limits in 2026 are two different numbers: Meta’s Messaging API ceilings, then your tool’s plan cap on top. The meters live at Instagram DM Limits in 2026.

You cannot treat the inbox like Gmail. Official private replies are paced. A viral Reel that tries to DM 40,000 commenters in an afternoon will queue. That is Instagram protecting the inbox, not your tool “breaking.”

There is also a 24-hour customer care window after the person last messaged you. Promotional follow-ups outside that window fail or need approved tags. Details stay on Instagram 24-Hour Messaging Window in 2026. Plan the follow-up at 2 hours, not at 3 days.

Tool caps sit on top. DM Automation Free is 100 DMs/month. Starter is 2,000. Pro is 15,000. LinkDM Free is 1,000. ReplyRush Free is 1,500 without comment auto-reply. ManyChat meters contacts. “Unlimited” on a vendor page still stops at Meta. When a vendor says unlimited, ask: unlimited against their meter, or unlimited against Instagram?

Broadcasts to people who never contacted you are not an API feature you should plan a business on. Keyword DMs go to people who already commented, replied, or opened the thread.

How do automated DMs fit?

Automated DMs are official-API sends into the same Instagram inbox, triggered by a comment, a story reply, a keyword in the thread, or an ad that opens a chat. They are still DMs. The person still reads them as you.

They are not a second product. They are not a growth bot that logs in with your password and cold-messages strangers. They are not Instagram’s native “auto reply” toggle covering every case. Native options and gaps live at Does Instagram Have Auto Reply in 2026?.

The fit is volume on a hand-raise. You cannot sit in Requests for four hours after a Reel. The tool sends the first private message so the URL arrives while they still care. You can still jump in as a human. Automation is the first line, not a replacement for every conversation.

Switch the account type first. Then connect with Instagram login. Then pick one keyword. Then test from a second account. If the test account does not receive a DM, check account type, Requests, and whether you used the keyword you printed on screen.

Triggers, webhooks, and what Meta allows step by step live at How Instagram DM automation works. The complete playbook is Instagram DM Automation: The Complete 2026 Guide. The object you are sending is a private inbox message.

If the DM holds a payment link, the tool sent the link. Stripe or PayPal process the payment. If the DM asks for an email, you still have to put that address in a real email tool if you want a newsletter. The inbox is the room. It is not your whole stack.

What does a 2,000-DM month cost?

A 2,000-DM month costs $19 on DM Automation Starter, $9.99 billed yearly on Legend Pro (no DM bucket; Meta still paces you), or a ManyChat contact tier if those 2,000 people become active contacts. Pick the meter that matches a spike, not the prettiest dashboard.

Starter is $19/month for 2,000 DMs. Free is 100 DMs/month forever. Annual Starter is $15/month billed annually. If you know the Reel can clear 100 comments, do not stay on free through launch week. Pro is $49/month ($39 billed annually) for 15,000 DMs and 3 accounts when one login is not enough (DM Automation pricing, October 2026).

Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly with unlimited DMs up to 800/hour. Free is 500 DM automations/month. Trendsetter is $24.99/month billed yearly. Trendsetter Pro is $49.99/month billed yearly. Multi Starter is $160/year for 3 accounts (instantdm.com/pricing, October 2026). The 2,000-DM month does not fill a Legend Pro bucket. It can still hit Meta’s hourly ceiling. That is a limits problem, not a price problem.

ManyChat Pro is $29/month billed yearly for 2,500 active contacts on the 2 March 2026 table (Featurebase). If 2,000 new people stay “active,” you are on that tier or climbing. Essential is $17/$14 for 250 contacts and will not hold a 2,000-person spike. Free is 25 contacts. See ManyChat pricing. manychat.com/pricing returned 403 from this host on 30 October 2026, so those numbers are the Featurebase quote of ManyChat’s public table.

LinkDM Pro is $19/month for 25,000 DMs. ReplyRush Lite is $10/month for 7,500. Chatfuel Business is US$18/month billed yearly plus US$20 AI credits/month. Respond.io Starter is $79/month. SetSmart Light is $25/month. For a pure keyword send, $79 and AI-message plans are the wrong invoice.

Cost is not conversion. 2,000 DMs with a dead URL is 2,000 wasted sends. Test the link on your phone before you print the keyword.

Who is each tool for?

Each tool on this list sends official-API DMs. They are for different inbox jobs. Keyword senders first. Suites and AI threads later. Shared inboxes last.

DM Automation is for the person who just switched to Business or Creator and needs the first keyword live today. Free at 100 DMs/month forever is the test. Starter at $19 is the 2,000-DM month.

Number two on this list is for the same keyword job when you would rather pay $9.99/month billed yearly than watch a bucket during a spike. Free at 500 automations/month is the no-card trial.

ManyChat is for Instagram plus WhatsApp, or a canvas that branches. Do not buy it to send one URL.

LinkDM is for published caps and link-in-DM volume. Free includes story auto-reply. Comment auto-reply is Pro at $19.

ReplyRush is for the lowest paid comment-to-DM start at $10 Lite. Free has DMs and no comment auto-reply.

Chatfuel is for FAQ after the first DM, at US$18/month billed yearly plus AI credits.

Respond.io is for a team that already lives in a shared inbox, at $79 Starter. Not for one keyword.

SetSmart is for an AI qualifier thread, at $25 Light or $97 Pro. Not for one LINK send.

If you are still on a personal account, none of these connect the way the ranking describes. Switch the account type first. Personal logins cannot connect the official API.

Agencies that need three logins look at DM Automation Pro ($49, 3 accounts), LinkDM Pro (3 accounts), or Multi Starter ($160/year, 3 accounts). Do not buy Respond.io because “we are a team” if the team only needed three keywords.

How do I choose in 10 minutes?

Choose in 10 minutes by locking account type, then inbox job, then the 2,000-DM bill. Do not start in a 40-step canvas if you needed one URL.

Minute 1-2. Open Instagram. Confirm Business or Creator. If it is personal, switch. Stop here if you cannot switch today. Nothing else on this page connects.

Minute 3-4. Write the job in one line. “Comment LINK, get the PDF URL.” That is a keyword DM. “Four people answer the same Instagram chat.” That is a shared inbox. “Ask budget, then send a booking URL.” That is an AI thread. Pick one.

Minute 5-6. If the job is keyword DM, rank is DM Automation, then the $9.99 yearly-billed plan, then ManyChat only if WhatsApp is already in the sentence. LinkDM and ReplyRush if you want published caps or a $10 Lite start.

Minute 7-8. Price the spike. If you expect under 100 DMs, free plans exist. If you expect about 2,000, Starter is $19, Legend Pro is $9.99 billed yearly, LinkDM Pro is $19, ReplyRush Lite is $10. If you expect WhatsApp plus Instagram, ManyChat’s contact meter is the honest bill.

Minute 9. Connect with Instagram login. Paste one URL. Use one keyword you also put on screen.

Minute 10. Test from a second account. Check Primary, General, and Requests. If the DM is there, you are done. If it is not, use Instagram DM Automation: The Complete 2026 Guide and How Instagram DM automation works.

Ten minutes is enough to pick. It is not enough to design seven flows. Ship one.

FAQ

What are Instagram DMs?

Instagram DMs are private messages in the Instagram inbox, including story replies and comment-to-DM threads. Requests are still DMs. They wait in a different tray until you accept them.

Where do I find Instagram DMs on my phone?

Open Instagram, then the paper-plane / Messages icon. Look in Primary first, then General, then Message Requests. Automated sends use the same inbox.

Are Instagram message requests the same as DMs?

Yes. A request is a DM from someone you have not accepted yet. Accept it and it becomes a normal thread. Ignore it and they never see your reply sitting in Primary.

Can a personal Instagram account use DM automation?

No. A personal Instagram account cannot connect official DM automation. Switch to Business or Creator, then connect with Instagram login. Human replies in the app still work on personal.

Do story replies count as DMs?

Yes. A story reply opens a private inbox thread. Story reply automation sends a DM in that thread. See Instagram story reply automation.

Is a comment-to-DM still a DM?

Yes. The comment stays public. The follow-up is a private inbox message. That follow-up is a DM. See Comment-to-DM automation.

A bio link is one URL for everyone. A DM can send the matching URL for the keyword they used, in private, while they are still on the clip. Keep the bio for profile visits. Use DMs for hand-raises.

How much does a basic DM automation plan cost in 2026?

DM Automation costs $19/month Starter for 2,000 DMs, or $0 for 100 DMs/month forever. InstantDM Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly. ManyChat Pro is $29/month billed yearly for 2,500 contacts on the 2 March 2026 table (Featurebase). Verified 30 October 2026.

Does automation bypass Instagram DM limits?

No. Tools add their own caps. Meta still paces private replies and still enforces the 24-hour window. Read Instagram DM limits in 2026 and Instagram 24-hour messaging window in 2026.

What is the safest way to send automated DMs?

Use an official API tool, a Business or Creator account, and people who already commented, replied, or messaged you. Password apps that cold-DM strangers are the other category. See Is Instagram DM automation safe?.

Next step

Switch to Business or Creator if you are still on personal. Pick a free plan, connect one account, and send one keyword into the inbox from a second phone. Check Requests, not just Primary. Then pay for a bigger DM bucket only after that first private message actually arrives.
