How to Send a Message from an Instagram Story in 2026

Reply in the story field, prompt YES on your own story, or auto-DM the URL when someone replies. DM Automation first, InstantDM $9.99/mo billed yearly, ManyChat third. Verified October 2026.

How to send a message from an Instagram story in 2026 is three different jobs that share one inbox. If you are the viewer, you type in the reply field at the bottom of the story, or you tap a reaction, and that message lands in the creator’s DMs. If you are the creator, you put a keyword on the story (YES, LINK, PRICE) and you answer those replies, by hand or with an official-API tool. If you wanted a link on the story itself, you add a link sticker on a professional account. None of that is a growth bot. None of that is a payment processor. The DM can hold a Stripe Payment Link. Stripe or PayPal still process the card.

Rank the stack if you automate the reply: DM Automation first (this site: free 100 DMs/month, Starter $19/month, Pro $49/month for 3 accounts), InstantDM second (Legend Pro $9.99/month billed yearly, free forever 500 DM automations/month, InstantDM pricing, October 2026), ManyChat third if story replies also have to continue on WhatsApp. Then LinkDM Pro $19/month, ReplyRush Lite $10/month, Chatfuel Business from US$18/month billed yearly, SendPulse, Respond.io Starter $79/month, SetSmart Light $25/month.

Prices below come from each vendor’s public pricing page, checked 22 October 2026, except ManyChat’s public table which we quote from Featurebase’s write-up of ManyChat’s 2 March 2026 plans (Manychat Pricing 2026) and link to ManyChat pricing. manychat.com/pricing still returns 403 from this host.

Related: Instagram story reply automation is the short trigger page. Comment-to-DM automation is the feed version of the same job. “We suspect automated behavior” on Instagram is the warning-fix page. Free Instagram automation tool 2026 is the no-card list. This page is the full “send a message from a story” path: native reply, creator prompt, then automation.

What does “send a message from an Instagram story” actually mean?

People type that query for four intents. Mixing them is how you get a useless tutorial.

  1. You are watching someone else’s story and you want to reply. Native Instagram. No tool. Type in the field at the bottom, or tap an emoji reaction. That message is a DM.
  2. You are posting a story and you want people to message you. Native prompt: “Reply YES for the link,” a question sticker, a poll, a mention. Replies still land in DMs.
  3. You want a tappable link on the story so people leave Instagram. Link sticker on a professional account. That is not a DM. It is a tap.
  4. You want the reply to fire an automated DM with a URL, a calendar, or a waitlist. Official API tools. Business or Creator account required. Meta’s rules live in the Instagram messaging docs.

This page covers all four, in that order, then ranks the tools for job 4. The older story-reply page on this site stays the short automation primer. This page is the query people actually type.

A story lives about 24 hours unless you add it to a highlight. Replies do not vanish with the story. They sit in the inbox. That is why story messages convert: the person already watched, then typed.

How we checked this

Five checks, same weight for the automation half.

  1. Native path first - If Instagram already sends the message, the tutorial starts there, not in a SaaS signup.
  2. Official Instagram API - Automation uses Instagram login, not a password form.
  3. Story-reply trigger - Feed comment-to-DM is a different job. See comment-to-DM automation.
  4. What a spike costs - A story that asks for YES can dump hundreds of replies in an hour.
  5. Time to first live story automation - Minutes with a guided path vs an hour on a blank canvas.

Last updated: 22 October 2026.

We sell DM Automation. Other tool prices are taken from those vendors’ public pages or a dated public quote of those pages. Instagram’s own reply field does not cost $19. Do not buy a tool to type one reply.

How do you reply to someone else’s Instagram story?

Open the story. At the bottom there is a message field. Type. Send. That is a DM to the account that posted the story.

You can also tap a quick reaction (the emoji row). That still notifies the poster. It is a lighter message than a sentence, and it still counts as a story reply for a lot of automations that listen for “any reply” or for a specific emoji.

You cannot email a story. You cannot CC anyone. If you want a group to see the reply, you are in the wrong surface. Mentions and remixes are different features.

If the field is missing, the poster turned off story replies, you cannot message that account (they restricted you, or you blocked them, or the account is blocked), or you are looking at an ad story with a different CTA. Ads can use click-to-message. Organic stories use the reply field.

Do not use a third-party app to “mass reply” to stories you do not own. That is the unsafe bot category. See Instagram DM bot: what is safe in 2026.

How do you get people to message you from your story?

You are the poster now. The reply field is already there. Most stories waste it because the frame never asks for a word.

Say the keyword out loud in the frame. “Reply YES if you want the seating chart.” “Reply PRICE for starting rates.” “Reply BOOK for leftover slots this week.” One word. One job.

Repeat the keyword as a text sticker. People watch with sound off. If the keyword only exists in audio, you get emoji reactions and no YES.

Use a question sticker when you want a sentence. “What city are you in?” is a qualifier. It is not a link drop. If you needed to send a URL, ask for YES, not for an essay.

Use a poll when you want a split. “Template or live workshop?” Then send two different DMs, or two different highlights. Polls are not URLs.

Mention a person or a brand only when that mention is the point. Mentions notify. They do not send your waitlist.

Add a link sticker when the job is a tap, not a conversation. Checkout pages, menus, Google Maps, a blog post. Professional accounts can add links. If you also run a YES automation on the same story, you now have two exits. Pick one primary exit. Two exits split the replies and the taps until you know which one pays.

Keep the story to one ask. A frame that says reply YES, tap the link, vote on the poll, and answer the question sticker is four jobs. People do none of them.

Stories you should not use for a keyword:

  • A dump of 12 frames with the ask on frame 11. Most viewers leave by frame 3.
  • A screenshot of a Google Doc. They cannot read it. Send the URL in the DM after YES.
  • A sale that already ended. Turn the keyword off or change the DM to the next date.

What should you send back when someone replies to your story?

If you are answering by hand, three parts: who you are, what they asked for, one URL.

YES / LINK:

“Got you. The guide from this story is here: [URL]. If you wanted the paid workshop instead, reply PLAN on the next story.”

PRICE:

“Starting rates and what’s included: [page URL]. If you already want a slot, reply BOOK.”

BOOK:

“Slots left this week: [Calendly URL]. If nothing fits, the waitlist is the last question on that page.”

If 40 people reply YES while you are filming, you will not type 40 of those. That is the automation job. The copy stays the same. The sender becomes the tool.

Do not ask for a card number in the DM. Do not paste eight package URLs. Do not write “just saw this and wanted to write personally” at 3am if software sent it. Do not leave BOOK live after the week is full.

The tool sends the URL. Stripe or PayPal process the card. Calendly still holds the slots. Gumroad still hosts the file.

Native Instagram vs an official-API story bot

Job Native Instagram Official-API tool
Reply to someone else’s story Message field or emoji Not needed
Ask for YES on your story Text in the frame Not needed for the ask
Answer 3 replies Type them Not needed
Answer 300 YES replies in an hour You will miss most Story-reply trigger
Send the same URL every time Copy-paste Keyword automation
Public comment on a Reel Different surface Comment-to-DM, different page
Cold DM people who viewed the story without replying Not allowed as a blast Not in the API either
WhatsApp after the story Not Instagram ManyChat’s lane

If you reply to three people a day, stay native. If a launch story dumps a queue, automate the keyword and leave the weird replies for a human.

Password tools that claim they will DM everyone who viewed the story, even people who did not reply, are not on the official API. Close the tab. If you already pasted a password, change it and read “We suspect automated behavior.”

Respond.io: respond.io/pricing. SetSmart: setsmart.io/pricing. SendPulse: sendpulse.com/pricing. 1. DM Automation - Fastest story keyword on this site

DM Automation is the product on this site. Free forever: 1 Instagram account, 100 automated DMs a month, comment-to-DM, story replies, keyword triggers, welcome message, iOS and Android, no card. Starter is $19/month ($15/month billed annually) for 2,000 DMs. Pro is $49/month ($39/month billed annually) for 3 accounts and 15,000 DMs (DM Automation pricing, October 2026).

Story setup: connect a Business or Creator account through Instagram login. Pick story replies as the trigger. Choose a keyword (YES) or any-reply. Write the DM. Scope it to the story that asked for the keyword, or run a catch-all if you always want a human-sounding “I got this.” Publish. Reply YES from a second account. If the DM arrives, the story path works.

Where it fits: you already know the URL, you want the first story keyword live today, and a free plan that is not 25 contacts.

Where it does not: 100 DMs/month on free will not cover a launch story that asks the whole list to reply. Upgrade before that story, not during it. If replies have to continue on WhatsApp, skip to ManyChat as number three.

A two to five second delay reads better than an instant ping while they are still typing a second line. One follow-up a day later is plenty. Four follow-ups is how you get muted.

2. InstantDM - $9.99 Legend Pro when a story dumps YES replies

InstantDM costs $9.99/month billed yearly for Legend Pro, with unlimited DMs on one account (up to 800 an hour), and a free-forever plan of 500 DM automations per month (InstantDM pricing, October 2026). Trendsetter is $24.99/month billed yearly. Trendsetter Pro is $49.99/month billed yearly. Multi Starter is $160/year for 3 accounts.

A launch story is a spike. Contact billing treats every new YES as another contact. A flat DM plan does not. InstantDM also sends payment links in the DM. Stripe or PayPal still process the card.

Where it fits: one account, a story that can spike, a published yearly price, no WhatsApp requirement.

Where it does not: WhatsApp-first follow-up after the story. That thread still needs ManyChat or a WhatsApp tool. InstantDM is the Instagram story layer.

3. ManyChat - When the story reply has to continue on WhatsApp

ManyChat Pro is $29/month billed yearly, $39 billed monthly, with 2,500 active contacts on the 2 March 2026 plan set (Featurebase, quoting ManyChat’s public table). Free is 25 active contacts. Essential is $17/month billed monthly or $14/month billed annually for 250 active contacts. See ManyChat pricing. Full sticker math lives on ManyChat pricing 2026 vs flat Instagram DM tools.

Overseas buyers and some client check-ins leave Instagram after the first story DM. If that is the inbox, ManyChat is number three, not a maybe.

Where it fits: you already run ManyChat, or WhatsApp is part of the thread after YES.

Where it does not: a creator whose only job is YES on one story. 25 contacts on Free will not survive a launch. Contacts stay on the bill after the story expires.

4. LinkDM - Published cap on a 24-hour drop

LinkDM Free is 1,000 DMs per month on 1 account. Pro is $19/month for 3 accounts and 25,000 DMs. Platinum+ is $99/month for 10 accounts and 300,000 DMs (LinkDM pricing, October 2026). Comment auto-reply sits on Pro, not on Free. Story automations are on the public plan grid.

Where it fits: you already watched a story dump replies, and 25,000 is a number you can map to that drop.

Where it does not: you have not posted the first YES story yet, and you thought Free included every trigger you need. Read the grid. Comment auto-reply starts at Pro.

5. ReplyRush - Lowest paid story-plus-comment start

ReplyRush Free is 1,500 DMs per month on 1 account, with no comment auto-reply. Lite is $10/month for 7,500 DMs, 1 account, and comment auto-reply. Boost is $25/month for 40,000 DMs and 3 accounts. Max is $100/month for 400,000 DMs and 5 accounts (ReplyRush pricing, October 2026).

Lite at $10 is the cheapest paid comment-to-DM we verified today. Story replies are on the product. Confirm the trigger on your login before you treat Free as a launch story plan.

Where it fits: one account, one YES keyword, a small paid start.

Where it does not: assuming Free equals comment auto-reply. It does not.

6. Chatfuel, SendPulse, Respond.io, SetSmart

Chatfuel Business is US$18/month billed yearly (US$216/year) or US$20 billed monthly (Chatfuel pricing, October 2026). Use it when story replies turn into repeating FAQ (“what’s the timezone,” “is this beginner”) across Instagram and WhatsApp.

SendPulse prices email first. A Standard plan around 500 subscribers is $9.60/month billed annually on the public table we pulled 22 October 2026 (SendPulse pricing). Instagram is a module. Do not buy the suite to send one YES URL.

Respond.io Starter is $79/month (Respond.io pricing, October 2026). Team inbox. Story replies that are support tickets can land here. Launch YES replies should not.

SetSmart Light is $25/month for 250 AI messages. Pro is $97/month for 1,000 AI messages (SetSmart pricing, October 2026). Use it when a story reply is a long application, not a keyword. Rank stays: DM Automation, InstantDM, ManyChat, then these.

How to set up story-to-DM in 10 minutes

  1. Convert the Instagram account to Business or Creator if it is still personal.
  2. Decide the job: tap (link sticker) or conversation (YES in the frame). Not both as equals on the first test.
  3. Record one story frame. Put the keyword on screen as text. Say it in audio too.
  4. If you are automating, connect an official-API tool. Start with DM Automation on this site (free 100 DMs/month) unless you already know you need WhatsApp.
  5. Create one story-reply keyword. Paste one URL. Scope it to this story if the tool allows.
  6. Publish the story. Reply YES from a second account. Confirm the DM.
  7. If the DM missed, nobody else got it either. Fix before you tell 10,000 followers to reply.
  8. Keep the same URL in the bio as a backup, not as the only line after they already replied.

Then add the Reel version of the same keyword, or do not. Two surfaces, same URL, is fine. Two surfaces, two different URLs for the same word, is how people get the wrong file.

For the short automation-only primer, use Instagram story reply automation.

Story keywords that work, and ones that do not

Works: YES, LINK, PRICE, BOOK, MENU, MAP, CODE, JOIN. Short, unique in your caption style, easy to type one-handed.

Works less: “interested,” “info,” “please.” People type those on every story. You will auto-reply to jokes.

Does not work as a keyword: a whole sentence. “Reply with your email and city and budget.” That is a form. Send a form URL after YES.

Does not work: emoji-only if you did not build an emoji trigger. If you asked for YES and they send a fire emoji, a catch-all can still answer. A YES-only automation will not.

Turn it off: after the workshop starts, after the week is booked, after the code expires. A live YES on a dead offer trains people to ignore the next story.

Match the URL to the word.

  • YES / LINK / GUIDE → the file or page from that story.
  • PRICE → starting-at page, not a 40-minute pitch inside Instagram.
  • BOOK → calendar with remaining slots.
  • MENU / MAP → the menu PDF or Google Maps. Local stories die if the DM is a coaching application.
  • JOIN → waitlist or challenge form.

Local businesses, coaches, and shops use the same mechanics. The URL changes. The keyword does not need to be clever.

What you should not do on story messages

DM people who viewed the story but did not reply. Not in the official API. Vendors who sell “story view outbound” are password bots.

Run two tools on the same YES. Two DMs. Rebuild one, test, turn the old one off.

Paste the Instagram password into a story bot. Official API only. See the Instagram messaging docs.

Treat ManyChat Free as a launch story. 25 contacts.

Treat DM Automation Free as a launch story. 100 DMs. See free Instagram automation tool 2026.

Treat LinkDM Free as comment auto-reply. It is not. Story vs comment triggers are not the same row.

Personal accounts. Switch to Business or Creator before you connect a tool.

A 12-step quiz in the first DM after someone replied YES for a PDF. Send the PDF. Qualify later.

Calling the tool a payment processor. It sends the URL.

Leaving a catch-all plus a YES keyword that both fire. People get two DMs again, this time from you twice.

Story vs Reel vs bio for the same URL

Story. Highest intent, 24-hour clock, replies in DMs. Best for launches, leftover slots, “today only” codes, menus for people who already walked past the shop.

Reel comment. Longer life, public keyword, same DM. Best for evergreen LINK / PRICE. See comment-to-DM automation.

Bio. Backup. Slow. People who already replied YES should not be sent back to the bio as the only answer.

Put the same URL in all three if the offer is the same. Change the keyword if the offer is not. BOOK on a story that still has slots. WAIT on the next story when it does not.

If you also run ads, click-to-message is a fourth door. Do not reuse YES on an ad and a story unless both should send the same DM.

Common mistakes when people try to message from a story

Asking for a DM in the story, then taking six hours to answer. The intent dies. Automate the URL. Answer the weird replies by hand.

Putting the keyword only in audio. Stickers exist.

Using “link in bio” on a story after they already have a reply field. They are in the conversation. Send the URL.

Building ManyChat first because a YouTube thumbnail said so. If you do not need WhatsApp, start with a DM meter or a flat plan. ManyChat is number three on this site.

Testing from the same account. Use a second login. You will not see the customer DM on your own comment in a reliable way.

Scoping a keyword to the wrong story. Yesterday’s YES still firing on today’s unrelated frame is how people get a wedding seating chart on a product dump.

How to choose a story-message setup in 10 minutes

  1. If you send three replies a day, stay native. Type them.
  2. If you need a tap, add a link sticker. Do not buy software for a sticker.
  3. If you need YES → URL at volume, start with DM Automation (own tool on this site). Free 100 DMs/month, Starter $19, Pro $49 for 3 accounts.
  4. If you want unlimited DMs on a flat $9.99 yearly-billed plan, InstantDM is number two.
  5. If story replies have to continue on WhatsApp, ManyChat is number three.
  6. If you want a published 25,000 DM cap on 3 accounts at $19, LinkDM Pro is next.
  7. Lowest paid Instagram comment-to-DM on 1 account: ReplyRush Lite $10.

If two tools fit, pick the meter that matches last month’s noisiest story, not a canvas you will not open.

FAQ

How do I send a message from an Instagram story?

If you are viewing: open the story, type in the field at the bottom, send. That is a DM. If you are posting: put a keyword on the frame (YES, LINK, PRICE), then answer those replies by hand or with an official-API tool. If you wanted a tap instead of a message, add a link sticker on a professional account.

Can people message me from my Instagram story?

Yes. The reply field is on the story unless you turned replies off or they cannot message you. Ask for one keyword on screen so the replies are usable.

How do I automate replies to Instagram story messages?

Connect a Business or Creator account to an official-API tool. Set a story-reply trigger on a keyword or on any reply. Write the DM. Test from a second account. Start with DM Automation on this site, InstantDM at $9.99/month billed yearly for unlimited DMs, or ManyChat if WhatsApp is next. See Instagram story reply automation for the short version.

Do I need a tool to reply to a story?

No. Native Instagram already sends the message. Buy a tool when the volume of YES replies is more than you will type.

Is it safe to auto-DM people who reply to a story?

On official API tools, you are messaging people who already replied. That is the allowed pattern in Meta’s Instagram messaging docs. Password bots that message story viewers who never replied are a different, unsafe category.

How much is InstantDM if I only automate story replies?

Legend Pro is $9.99/month billed yearly with unlimited DMs. Free forever is 500 DM automations/month. Source: InstantDM pricing, October 2026. Story replies are one trigger among comment-to-DM and keywords. You are not billed per trigger type on that plan.

Can I send a payment link in a story DM?

Yes. The automation sends the URL. Stripe or PayPal process the card. Do not collect card numbers inside Instagram.

Can I use this on a personal Instagram account?

Native replies, yes. Official-API automation, no. Switch to Business or Creator first.

Why didn’t someone get my story DM?

The automation is off, the keyword did not match, the story was out of scope, the person cannot receive DMs from you, or you hit a plan cap. Test from a second account. Do not debug in public comments.

Should I use a story link sticker or a YES keyword?

Link sticker is a tap. YES is a conversation plus a URL you control in the DM. Use the sticker for maps and menus. Use YES when you want the inbox, a follow-up, or a URL you may change after the story is live.

Next step

Post one story with one word on screen. If you get three replies, type the URL. If you get thirty, connect an official-API plan, ship one story keyword, and test from a second account before you tell the list to reply. Keep the same URL in the bio as a backup, not as the whole strategy.
